    Re: first day with kubuntu

Are you connecting wireless or with cable?
As far as I know the KNetworkManager has a problem with encrypted wireless (a bug I guess).
In jaunty at least - I'm assuming zou are using jaunty.

On my laptop I'm using the WICD network manager; it's pretty straight forward, like in windows.
You can install WICD from the repositories, using apt-get from the command line, but I would recommend Synaptic, which has a user-friendly GUI; it is a GTK app. but that does not really matter...

If you need more help, you have to be more specific with regard to you Internet connection.

    Hope that helps,

Are you sure you even need to "setup" a connection? For broadband, Linux (unlike Windows) normally just finds the network on your ethernet port.

Try opening your browser -- Konqueror is the default browser. KMenu>Applications>Internet>Browser/Konqueror. What do you see?

dibl is right, wired connections to a router are usually not a problem at all - they just work.
But as you say, then you still need your user name and password for your ISP.

My guess is that the connection itself works but your ISP is the problem.

When you are using a router you have to set it up in the router.

When you are using a modem you probably need some software to access and configure the modem... I have no experience with that.

In any case you should not have to use a static IP or a specific Domain Name Server (DNS); leave it on automatic (or blank...).

It's also possible that there are issues with the drivers for your ethernet card, but that is very rare.

If you need to enter an account and password for your isp, try pointing your browser at 192.168.1.1, and see if that brings up the login screen.
You may be able to configure your dsl modem, if that is what you are using, for automatic login.
