ALSA driver failed after upgrade. Could not recognise Sound Blaster Live 7.1

Dear Kubuntu users please help ,

    My system : AMD Opteron 64, Sound Card : Sound Blaster Live 7.1 24bit , OS: Kubuntu 9.04 (x64)

The problem started when I tried to fix the sound which was not detected through microphone neither in sound recorder program nor with the skype. So I did lots of search on the internet and found out that upgrading my ALSA could help, so the hunt to get terminal scripts began and I have found the instructions shown below for the terminal :
    cd ~
    wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/drive...1.0.20.tar.bz2
    wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/lib/a...1.0.20.tar.bz2
    wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/utils...1.0.20.tar.bz2
    tar xjf alsa-driver-1.0.20.tar.bz2
    tar xjf alsa-lib-1.0.20.tar.bz2
    tar xjf alsa-utils-1.0.20.tar.bz2
    cd ~/alsa-driver-1.0.20
    ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel --with-oss=yes --with-sequencer=yes
    make
    sudo make install
    cd ~/alsa-lib-1.0.20
    ./configure
    make
    sudo make install
    cd ~/alsa-utils-1.0.20
    ./configure
    make
    sudo make install

And after running the above instructions , the terminal did lots of things [attached at the end of this message , for you to see ]. But I realised that the above code configure some hda-intel card (./configure --with-cards=hda-intel --with-oss=yes --with-sequencer=yes ) and not the Sound Blaster Live 7.1.
When I reboot my system I got system error that " KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed . DO YOU WANT KDE TO PERMANENTLY FORGET ABOUT THESE DEVICES? This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed:
    Capture: CA0106 (SIDE SPEAKERS)
    Capture: LIVE! 7.1 24BIT [SB0401] (CA0106)
    OUTPUT: CA0106 (SIDE SPEAKERS)
    output: LIVE! 7.1 24BIT [SB0401] (CA0106) " : please view the image attached "warning.png"

And then I clicked on Manage Devices button on this warning message and the dialogue box showed me the LIVE! 7.1 24BIT [SB0401] (CA0106) , greyed out not selectable ( attached image "SoundVideoDialogueBox.png")

Please help me to restore my sound driver , audio capabilities . How to fix this big mess . Please enlighten me out of this problem.

Below is the text that I got in terminal after running the instructions given above in bold blue

Re: ALSA driver failed after upgrade. Could not recognise Sound Blaster Live 7.1

why don't you just remove all these folders (with Dolphin) and start again?

This time, just use --with-cards=all; it will take a lil' longer, but who cares?

      Many thanks for your reply

Pardon my ignorance , do I just delete all those folders from the drive , this what you mean?
Do I not have to uninstall the faulty installed driver ( as done in windows) and how would the deleting off the folders would get the wrong alsa driver embedded in the kernel rectified?
Please be more specific and give some clear directions , sorry I am all new to linux , my first attempt to linux as i want NOT TO SUPPORT MICROSOFT IN ANY WAY ~ Mr Bill Gates is Eugenicists = A VERY BAD GUY ~

Re: ALSA driver failed after upgrade. Could not recognise Sound Blaster Live 7.1

Hi again. Let me start by saying that doing a manual install is not the thing to do if you are new to linux, Most likely there was a solution with the existing drivers. But let's see if we can get this going now that you are at it.

Drivers can be uninstalled in linux if you installed them with the right tools, but in this case we will just overwrite them with a new, better version. So, yes, please remove them locally from the folder you used, and start all over. You will do all the same as before, except for the configure step, where you need to pass

        ./configure --with-cards=all --with-oss=yes --with-sequencer=yes

After that, please reboot and see how it goes

Re: ALSA driver failed after upgrade. Could not recognise Sound Blaster Live 7.1

Many thanks lmilano for your valuable reply

Yes the sound is back and I could hear mp3s on Songbird application. There is one thing I would like to draw your attention to is this message I got in terminal after installation :

          cat WARNING
WARNING!!! The mixer channels for the ALSA driver are muted by default!!!
          ************************************************** ************************
You would use some ALSA or OSS mixer to set the appropriate volume.

Any idea what I should do next to optimise the channels in ALSA. And how to start "MICROPHONE SOUND RECORDING" , my microphone is still not detected .
Please guide and direct on the problem above.

And for those who would stumble upon this thread for the solution for reinstalling the latest version (as of 7th August 2009 version "alsa-driver-1.0.20" ), follow the steps given below:

          1) Open the terminal
          2) Paste the code given below inside terminal and press enter (good luck)

          cd ~
          wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/drive...1.0.20.tar.bz2
          wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/lib/a...1.0.20.tar.bz2
          wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/utils...1.0.20.tar.bz2
          tar xjf alsa-driver-1.0.20.tar.bz2
          tar xjf alsa-lib-1.0.20.tar.bz2
          tar xjf alsa-utils-1.0.20.tar.bz2
          cd ~/alsa-driver-1.0.20
          ./configure --with-cards=all --with-oss=yes --with-sequencer=yes
          make
          sudo make install
          cd ~/alsa-lib-1.0.20
          ./configure
          make
          sudo make install
          cd ~/alsa-utils-1.0.20
          ./configure
          make
          sudo make in
          stall

And also come back to view the solution to get your microphone working ( hopefully someone will solve this problem in future) .

~ MANY THANKS FOR ALL THE LINUX-KUBUNTU USERS FOR TAKING TIME OUT FOR PROVIDING SOLUTIONS TO OTHER USERS ~

Excellent. Now you need to go to the mixer, it looks like a speaker, and it should be in the system tray, in the panel (bottom of the screen). Click on it and make sure the microphone is enabled.

I am glad we solved the broken sound, but as I suspected, it wasn't good advice to compile your alsa drivers manually to begin with (this is only necessary if you have incredibly new hardware, still not supported in the alsa drivers provided by kubuntu).

I have attached the screen-shot of the mixer on my system. Please look at the settings I have done on it . Unfortunately I couldn't find any option to enable microphone in the mixer

Re: ALSA driver failed after upgrade. Could not recognise Sound Blaster Live 7.1

                Hello ,

I had noticed a quick message flash everytime I restart my pc which is (also attached the screen-shot)
"NOTIFICATION FROM PHONON: KDE'S MULTIMEDIA LIBRARY"
The audio playback device Live! 7.1 24bit[SB0410](CA0106) does not work.
Falling back to CA0106, CA0106 ( Side Speakers).

I have been experiencing this problem from day 1 of Kubuntu9.04 installation that I am getting sound output only in front speakers and never in side or rear speakers. BUt I have got notification of this problem recently viva this system message shown above.

Secondly whenever one audio application is running I don't get the audio from the second application which uses audio , for example if I am listening to music on Songbird app and open Skype , the skype sounds are all muted and vice-versa.

Still I never able to solve the problem from where all this started "Unable to get MICROPHONE working" either in any sound recording app and in Skype??

Hope someone would give some guidance and direct to the source to get these problem fixed.
