No keyboard & mouse after upgrade

I upgraded to 9.04 and on reboot it came to the login screen and the keyboard and mouse would not work. The system wasn't frozen. Trying to figure out what was wrong I unplugged my usb mouse and put an adapter on it and plugged it into the mouse serial port and it worked. Simply unplugging and replugging doesn't work though, it has to be changing the type of port so the connection looks entirely new. On a hunch I unplugged the keyboard and mouse and let the system entirely boot and then plugged them in. That works, but what a pain every time I boot!

I am also having camera issues which can be seen at this thread: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3105456.0

I am not sure if the two problems are related or not as they both involve ports. Any help would be great!!!

Yes, it could be related. Maybe it is a good idea to install and run "sudo sysv-rc-config" and check whether dbus and hald are both running.

When I run that command I get this:

      Code:
      sudo: sysv-rc-config: command not found
Is it possible it is not installed and I should install it?

yes, you need to install it (you missed that bit in my post) )

I assume sudo sysv-rc-conf is what you meant, not sudo sysv-rc-config. I should read responses more thoroughly, sorry... Anyway I installed it and ran the command. There are run levels: 1,2,3,4,5,0,6,S. dbus has check marks on 2,3,4,5 and halt (there was no hald) has check marks on only 0. Is this what you needed to know? What do I do now?

Yes, I meant that, I am not at my desk to check syntax, sorry. Can you please check if HAL is installed? (this is crucial)

Hal is listed with checks in 2,3,4,5.

Re: No keyboard & mouse after upgrade

Ah, ok, that checks out ok (hal's "daemon" is called hald, that's why we got confused). I was hoping you were just missing hal!. You can check the status of these services:

                Code:
                sudo service hal status
But I am sure they are both running. Oh well, it must be something else!

Re: No keyboard & mouse after upgrade

In reading another thread I saw that someone fixed the problem by doing a fresh install. He thought it may be that old settings in xorg.conf were causing the problem and that the fresh install created a new file instead of relying on old settings.

Here is my xorg.conf. Does anyone spot anything that could cause this and/or is there an automatic way to generate a new one to rule this out as the problem?

                    Code:
                    # xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
                    #
                    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
                    # values from the debconf database.
                    #
                    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
                    # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
                    #
                    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
                    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
                    # package.
                    #
                    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
                    # again, run the following command:
                    # sudo dpkg-re configure -phigh xserver-xorg

read the top of the file (xorg.conf) and you will see how to generate a new one.

Re: No keyboard & mouse after upgrade

You see why I was asking for hal?
So, the lines for mouse and keyboard are commented out (a # at the beginning) , and it explains why (this should be handled by hal)

It seems to me like you hal is not working properly or at the right time, maybe you can reinstall it, tough most likely is something more subtle than that

Another thing you can try is to uncomment those lines using kate
                        Code:
                        kdesudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf
And of course the suggestion from VINNY makes a lot of sense, but I would try things in the order I mentioned them

Reinstalling hal did no good nor did removing the comments from xorg.conf. I found this link https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...hal/+bug/74236 which is a little old but shows that hal has had difficulty in this area in the past. Is there a way to try a different version of hal, perhaps an older more stable version?
