System runs slow after new install

I searched but didn't find this topic. If it's been made already I apologize.

I ran Kubuntu from the DVD and in ran perfectly. I went ahead and installed it without any problems but it's running incredibly slow. Everything is choppy and the mouse freezes in place and then jumps across the screen. I'm new to Linux and I have no idea why this is happening. Windows Vista runs just fine, and as I said Kubuntu ran perfectly from the DVD. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What version of Kubuntu did you install? What are the specs for your system - CPU, installed RAM, and video card/chip set.
