What are you trying to do exactly? Keep the music in the external HDD, read it from a PC attached to it, and stream to other computers?Or just the first thing?
VLC provides streaming, although I still couldn't get it to work (I saw a couple HOWTO's and I still couldn't figure it out, I am sure I am missing something silly) -

i installed rhythmnbox its seems to work
