Problems installing Kubuntu on Samsung Laptop

    Hi all,

I have been having problems with installing Kubuntu on a Samsung P560.

So far I have unsuccessfully installed Alternate x64 Kubuntu, the Intel graphics means that I can not get any sort of screen running.

So I have tried to install the x64 alternate installers for Intrepid and Hardy. Both fail immediately after selecting to install. Screen goes blank and the the laptop reboots.

This is unusual as I have never had a problem in installing Ubuntu or Kubuntu on any other PC/Laptop before - which probably explains why I am baffled now!

BTW I really would prefer to run x64.

    Thanks

    Douggie

You've verified that your lappie's CPU is a 64-bit architecture?

How about booting and running off a Live CD -- how does that work? If it works, I'd play around installing hwinfo and then run it and see what it has to say about your hardware -- is the Intel GPU very old or very new? There are issues with Intel GPUs in the new X.org system, but they usually can be made to work, and I don't recall reports of "black screen" issues, mostly "slow/choppy".

Review the rules for burning a CD -- maybe you just made a bad one -- see #1 in the FAQs in my sig.

      Thanks for the reply.

My lappie is 64-bit, and I assume the Intel GPU is very new as the laptop is only 6 weeks old.

I am positive the CDs are ok as I have md5sum'd them and tested the disks for defects before installing.

I will have a go with the Live CD, although I have always preferred the alternate as I know I want to install :-)

I realise the Intel GPU will cause problems with Jaunty, thats why I tried Hardy and Intrepid. I was pretty shocked to encounter problems! I'd got so used to Kubuntu/Ubuntu just working!

I'll post how I get on.

      Cheers

Live CDs are not working at the moment. Live with Jaunty left me with 15 mins of Squash FS errors flying past at the console, at which point I gave up. I also tried Fedora 11 live CD, this failed as well.

So for the moment I am forgoing the benefits of Linux and living with the original OS (Vista :-()

Maybe 9.10 will do it... Only 3 months to wait...

        Thanks

In many cases errors in the install CDs are caused simply by burning at too high a rate. Often switching to the slowest burn rate solves the problem.

If the problem is graphics related it makes sense to use the "safe graphics" option which can be selected by selecting F4 or one of the other function keys (can't remember which one I'm afraid) at the startup screen.
