    Having some bug issues

    Hi,

    I have a couple of problems since freshly installing Kubuntu 9.4, the 64 bit version, with a NVIDIA driver also the 64 bit version from their website:
    • FireFox 3.5 (the A Web Browser 3.5 from Adept Manager) freezes from time to time while opening a University webpage (vista.kent.edu)
    • For some reason, get many weird errors when trying to do some normal things in FireFox 3.5 (the A Web Browser 3.5 from Adept Manager):
      XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
      Location: chrome://browser/content/aboutDialog.xul
      Line Number 40, Column 9: &logoCopyright;
      --------^
      When I go to Help--->About
      Web Browser couldn't retrieve add-ons
      When trying to view my addons, themes, plugins, languages, downloads using the sidebar
    • I do not have Adept Installer installed, and when I installed it using KPackageKit, it looks a lot different from the Adept Installer I had before reinstalling Kubuntu. It is not a KDE version, if there is such a thing, but looks messier with no way to sort the results by most highly rated or most downloaded/popular
    • When trying to make a new folder view on the Desktop, the Plasma platform crashes and leaves this message:
      This backtrace appears to be of no use.
      This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash.

    Any help would be much appreciated. Being new to all thinks Linux, the only thing I could think to try was to reboot the entire laptop. Didn't do much.

    Re: Having some bug issues

    Hi!

    Firefox: I'll look from home, can you please post the exact version you are using? This is in the help menu.

    Plasma Crash: maybe this will solve the issue:
    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2.4
    Otherwise, please send exact step-by-step instructions to reproduce the crash

    Package manager: it is (painfully) broken right now in Kubuntu. Long story short, I suggest installing and using Synaptic.

    HTH!

      Hi,

      On firefox: I can't go to the about section of the help menu, it posts this message in the window:

      XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
      Location: chrome://browser/content/aboutDialog.xul
      Line Number 40, Column 9: &logoCopyright;
      --------^
      The title says it is "A Web Browser 3.5" though.

      Thanks! I'll try that link, and will use synaptic for now too.

        Re: Having some bug issues

        Ah. Try in a Konsole:

        Code:
        sudo dpkg --get-selections |grep -i firefox
        You may want to search for firefox in synaptic though, and make sure it is correctly installed, etc

          Yep, that code worked. It is FireFox 3.5.

          I installed it from KPackageKit, which came with the Kubuntu.

          One question on the link, how do I do a "full upgrade"? I successfully added the provided deb link to the repositories, but I have no idea how to do the "full upgrade?..

            Did you install synaptic already? From there, you can do "Reload", then "Mark all Upgrades", and then "Edit -> Apply"

              Alright, I did a full upgrade. All the bugs are still intact, and there's only one noticable change: at the startup, there's a new option for Kubuntu....13, which is just a command line. Unfortunately, that's the default option so it just picks that if I don't hit enter and go to 11.

                Ok, you have a broken system. Can you output you sources.list? In Konsole:

                Code:
                sudo cat /etc/apt/sources.list > /tmp/mylist.txt
                kate /tmp/mylist.txt
                I can't see how you ended up with Firefox 3.5. I have all the latest updates and I am running FF 3.0.11

                  And to get 3.5 I did the following:

                  1. Went to KPackageKit
                  2. Typed in "firefox"
                  3. Clicked the plus sign next to "firefox-3.5-3.5~b4~hg20090330r24021+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 (amd64)"
                  4. Hit apply

                  I have a final next Thursday, but I'll try to respond as quickly as I can.

                    Re: Having some bug issues

                    Ah, for Firefox, just install the Supported one (3.0, look for Ubuntu logo close to supported software in Synaptic). The software list looks fine, and adding a desktop folder works fine for me. I am not sure why it is crashing for you.
