This is getting very messy. Should I just reinstall Kubuntu overall?

I hate to see you go through that ... but ... there seems to be some strange goings-on in your system. I THINK it is all X related, but it's hard to know for sure. It might indeed be a more certain path to success to simply grab your Alternate Install CD and start again.

If you do re-install, I would advise to find a way to run WOW that is not on top of Linux/wine -- use a Win XP VM, dual boot Windows, or something like that. I broke my Kubuntu system once trying to run a MS Visual FoxPro database on wine -- I know that wine has its limits, if you push it.

ok so far it is all the same for me and it must be wine because it happened after i uninstalled it. i also recived 4 updates that a ran and installed. dont rember what they were

ok well its something to do with update i just reinstalled and was fine then i updated and bam back to square one. whit the same problem + 1 the background for the desktop is checkered boarded
