    Upgrading OpenOffice in Kubuntu

Newbie questions, so bear with me please -

I have installed Jaunty, and have the native OO3.0.1 working fine. But OO3.1 came out some weeks back, and I'd prefer to use it. So, two questions:
    a) why does Kubuntu not notify me that OO updates are available when it runs its regular package update checks - do I need a particular source adding?
    b) why is OO3.0.1 in Jaunty installed all over /usr instead of in /opt (which is the OO default)? I assume that if I do manage to find a Kubuntu 3.1 update it will put it into /usr again?

What I'd like to do is delete all OO3.0.1 and download 3.1 from the OO site into /opt - will that cause me grief with KDE integration?

    Any help gratefully received....

The Policy (> FAQ: Repositories >> Ubuntu Backports )

Ubuntu releases a new version of its OS every 6 months. After a release, the version of all packages stays constant for the entire 6 months. For example, if Ubuntu ships with OpenOffice.org 2.0.x, it will remain at OpenOffice.org 2.0.x for the entire 6-month release cycle, even if a later version gets released during this time. The Ubuntu team may apply important security fixes to 2.0.x, but any new features or non-security bugfixes will not be made available...

The Backports (> FAQ: Repositories >> Ubuntu Backports )

This is where Ubuntu Backports comes in. The Backports team believes that the best update policy is a mix of Ubuntu's security-only policy AND providing new versions of some programs...

    ...

    How to request new packages

When you need a package backported which is not currently available, create a new bug report in the Backports Product of Launchpad:...

    I want it NOW !!

The Karmic Koala ( > Karmic Release Schedule, Plans, KDE 4.3), has the OO 3.1.

The Karmic Koala final stable version will be released on October 29th, 2009.

      Re: Upgrading OpenOffice in Kubuntu

Example: Testing what will happen if...

      Browsing https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa
      Reading notes (if any).

Adding the "OpenOffice.org Scribblers" to the repo list:
      Alt+F2 and kdesudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa.list

      Adding a line:
      Code:
      deb [url]http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ppa/ubuntu[/url] jaunty main
      Save and exit kate.

Adding the OpenOffice.org Scribblers key (konsole):
      Code:
      sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 247D1CFF
      Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 247D1CFF
gpg: requesting key 247D1CFF from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: key 247D1CFF: public key "Launchpad PPA for OpenOffice.org Scribblers" imported
gpg: no ultimately trusted keys found
      gpg: Total number processed: 1
      gpg: imported: 1 (RSA: 1)

      Updating the package database
      Code:
      sudo apt-get update
      Now there are:
      Code:
      apt-cache show openoffice.org
      Package: openoffice.org
      Version: 1:3.1.0-5ubuntu1~jaunty1

      Testing what will happen if

      Code:
      sudo apt-get install -s openoffice.org
      Reading package lists... Done
      Building dependency tree
      Reading state information... Done

The following extra packages will be installed:
      libhsqldb-java libservlet2.4-java openoffice.org-base openoffice.org-base-core...

The following packages will be REMOVED
      openoffice.org-kde openoffice.org-voikko
The following NEW packages will be installed
      libhsqldb-java libservlet2.4-java...
The following packages will be upgraded:
      openoffice.org-base-core openoffice.org-calc...

17 upgraded, 9 newly installed, 2 to remove and 21 not upgraded.

      The openoffice.org-kde is:
This package contains the KDE plugin for drawing OOo's widgets with
KDE/Qt and a KDEish File Picker when running under KDE.

.. and the last step will be

      Upgrade with the command:
      Code:
      sudo apt-get install openoffice.org
and disable the "OpenOffice.org Scribblers" PPA repository from the KPackagKit > Settings > Edit Sofware Sources
      Before you edit, BACKUP !

        Re: Upgrading OpenOffice in Kubuntu

Thanks for the info, which answers Q1 quite perfectly and resolves my main requirement.

I would (because I'm that sort of person) still like to understand why the Kubuntu package doesn't install into /opt by default, but I guess I can live with files being scattered around /usr if I have to. Just seems a bit odd to disregard the OO default location for no apparent reason.

        Thanks again,

Maybe this is a (?) Linux (Debian flavor /1/) thing > Linux Directory Structure Overview
          /opt

A rarely used directory in Linux for Optional Software Packages. This is extensively used in UNIX OS like Sun Solaris where the software packages are installed
and as the OpenOffice has its roots at the Sun... The Ubuntu OO is Go-OO > Topic: [SOLVED] How to install Go-OO?

/1/ Ubuntu is a Debian derived distribution.

Yup, I can see how that would influence their choice of location. No problem, and thanks for the help,

              Re: Upgrading OpenOffice in Kubuntu

I just installed 3.1. I haven't done much with it but the two things I noticed first are that you lose KDE integration (which never meant much to me) and it loads WAY faster.
              Kubuntu 11.10<br />KDE 4.7.3<br />Athlon XP 2000<br />512 MB RAM<br />ATI 64MB Video<br />~11 year old system still kicking :&gt
