Upgrading OpenOffice in Kubuntu

Newbie questions, so bear with me please -

I have installed Jaunty, and have the native OO3.0.1 working fine. But OO3.1 came out some weeks back, and I'd prefer to use it. So, two questions:
a) why does Kubuntu not notify me that OO updates are available when it runs its regular package update checks - do I need a particular source adding?
b) why is OO3.0.1 in Jaunty installed all over /usr instead of in /opt (which is the OO default)? I assume that if I do manage to find a Kubuntu 3.1 update it will put it into /usr again?

What I'd like to do is delete all OO3.0.1 and download 3.1 from the OO site into /opt - will that cause me grief with KDE integration?

Any help gratefully received....

Ubuntu releases a new version of its OS every 6 months. After a release, the version of all packages stays constant for the entire 6 months. For example, if Ubuntu ships with OpenOffice.org 2.0.x, it will remain at OpenOffice.org 2.0.x for the entire 6-month release cycle, even if a later version gets released during this time. The Ubuntu team may apply important security fixes to 2.0.x, but any new features or non-security bugfixes will not be made available...

This is where Ubuntu Backports comes in. The Backports team believes that the best update policy is a mix of Ubuntu's security-only policy AND providing new versions of some programs...

The Karmic Koala final stable version will be released on October 29th, 2009.

Alt+F2 and kdesudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ppa.list

Adding a line:

deb [url]http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ppa/ubuntu[/url] jaunty main

Save and exit kate.

Adding the OpenOffice.org Scribblers key (konsole):

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 247D1CFF

Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 247D1CFF

The openoffice.org-kde is:

.. and the last step will be

Upgrade with the command:

sudo apt-get install openoffice.org

and disable the "OpenOffice.org Scribblers" PPA repository from the KPackagKit > Settings > Edit Sofware Sources

Thanks for the info, which answers Q1 quite perfectly and resolves my main requirement.

I would (because I'm that sort of person) still like to understand why the Kubuntu package doesn't install into /opt by default, but I guess I can live with files being scattered around /usr if I have to. Just seems a bit odd to disregard the OO default location for no apparent reason.

Maybe this is a (?) Linux (Debian flavor /1/) thing > Linux Directory Structure Overview

/opt

A rarely used directory in Linux for Optional Software Packages. This is extensively used in UNIX OS like Sun Solaris where the software packages are installed

and as the OpenOffice has its roots at the Sun... The Ubuntu OO is Go-OO > Topic: [SOLVED] How to install Go-OO?


/1/ Ubuntu is a Debian derived distribution.

I just installed 3.1. I haven't done much with it but the two things I noticed first are that you lose KDE integration (which never meant much to me) and it loads WAY faster.
