    [solved] Witch steps to take to make a home network for printing?

    think that in my previous questions I asked the wrong questions. What I must know is the following,

    Witch steps to take, settings to make from install to get recognised by my network and other windows machines in this network. And pleas remember I am a Windows user and do not know coding or editing.

    Kubuntu 9.4
    Linux beautiful to watch!<br />Kubuntu 10.4 with Canon MX310 in Samba network with Windows XP &amp; 7

    I would suggest reading the following page, beginning to end, then come back here ready to ask questions if you run into problems. You don't need to be a developer to install and configure samba but you better get used to command line and editing files to use Linux.

    linux &amp;&amp; bash = &quot;the future&quot;

      The strange thing is that all questions about this Samba and network/printer problems with Windows in it end dead. There is never an solution but a new link to more none understandable text. How do we none Linux users ever get good help if every forum, this Kubuntu and Ubuntu, stops on the hard questions?

        And you, in turn, must please remember that the users on this Forum are totally uncompensated and busy with their own lives and livelihoods, and can only give limited time to helping others with their Kubuntu systems. So, what this means is, a reasonable amount of self-help is expected -- there are literally thousands of pages of information about networking, samba configuration, and previous questions asked and answered on this forum, Ubuntu Forum, and elsewhere on the 'net -- there is no reason for writing out detailed step-by-step instructions that have already been written a zillion times.

        So, here is what a little searching on the term "samba configuration" turns up for you:

        http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/

        and in my signature are the "Top 20 FAQs" which also have links for networking guidance.

        As far as "coding and editing" -- you do not need to ever know anything about coding (developing software code) to use Kubuntu Linux productively. However, you do need to understand how to open your text editor, kate, and use it to edit a text file, because many of the configuration files on your system are text files, including /etc/samba/smb.conf, and the only way to change the configuration on some of them is to open them and make a change. It's no big deal -- just using the keyboard for its intended purpose.

          I know you all put in valuable time and I appreciate it Its just as a windows user on windows I just plugged in and it worked. Now I stand in a big forest of difficult tasks and unknown bits of software. On Windows there are thousands books for dummies like me, for Linux there are more versions of linux than books...

            Re: Witch steps to take?

            I have to admit, I still don't fully understand what you are asking...however, from the replies, it looks like you are trying to access shared drives across the network...

            IF this is the case, you didn't just turn windows on and it worked. You had to learn how to map a drive, what the name or IP address was of the shared resource, even how to set a drive up to be shared, etc, etc. none of these things happen by themselves even in the Windows world.

            It's really not that much harder in Linux. I would be glad to help (if I can), but like I said, I am not sure what you are asking...do you have shared drives on a windows PC that you want to access in Kubuntu? Are you just trying to get on the network, or access the internet...I'm just not sure...

              Re: Witch steps to take?

              When I added a second Windows computer to my LAN, I had to learn how to share a drive, find the names of my computers, change my firewall settings in Norton AV, and install a router - took me more than a few days to puzzle it all out. Seems that a samba share involves about the same amount of work, or perhaps even less. Since you already know Windows maybe this seems like a bit of a hassle but if you were going from Linux to Windows you'd feel like Windows was a pain to learn too!!

                Read, read and read some more

                Did the OP even bother to tell us which Kubuntu he's using? Perhaps I missed it.

                Here's where I configured Samba sharing on Hardy Heron 8.04.2 with KDE 3.5:
                K_Menu -> System_Settings -> Network_&_Connectivity -> Sharing -> File_Sharing

                It is a simple GUI to configure shares for the Samba server. You have to click the Administrator Mode button and enter your password to configure sharing. I used simple sharing, which works fine for my LAN, but YMMV so read up to learn what will work best for you.

                More help for configuring the Samba server on Kubuntu and Ubuntu:
                • K_Menu -> Help -> Kubuntu_Documents -> Kubuntu_System_Documentation_Index -> Network -> Network_Sharing -> Samba
                • Alt+F2 -> Konsole -> and then enter:

                Code:
                sudo apt-get install samba-doc samba-doc-pdf
                (Enter your password when prompted)
                man samba
                man smbd
                man smb.conf
                less /etc/samba/smb.conf

                All those are found within easy reach of all new users, without having to even use Google.

                  Re: Witch steps to take?

                  Well thanks all for your efforts in this. The following stepa made it posible to create a network.

                  After reading and reading web-pages forums and some books I had to take muliple steps in the terminal. I tried different options on different web-pages telling this was the way to connect other windows computers to my new installed Kubuntu.

                  And than when I just wanted to give up after 20hrs of trying my terminal talked back to me telling gedit was not installed...? and most fortunate it gave me a string of code that i had to copy and past into the terminal. Then a lot of code went over the screen and at the end I had gedit installed. after that I could install/edit files and now it works.

                  Do not ask me what I have done because I really do not know but personal i think Linux/Kubuntu is a bitch on home networking with Windows.

                  Than when I had installed my Canon MX310 printer I had to use the MP150 drivers in Linux but connecting with my windows XP and Vista machines I got an error this was the wrong driver so I had to download and install the MX310 drivers for Windows.

                  Now all can print to my printer but it goes slow.....very slow. When I push print on my wireless vista laptop the print will come out after 3 minutes and the printer keeps telling me it cant connect or connection is refused.

                    gedit? That is the Gnome text editor -- it comes in Ubuntu -- I think you just installed a whole lot of Gnome gtk files.

                    As I previously mentioned (#3 above):

                    you do need to understand how to open your text editor, kate
                    kate is the KDE text editor.

                      Re: [solved] Witch steps to take to make a home network for printing?

                      A view days later and I installed Kubuntu for the third time because I messed up and Linux froze on me.

                      I can share a my linux computer and usb printer on it to XP as Vista machines but itś a unstable mess. I configured Samba so Lunux could be seen by the Windows machines. Strange is that every time I start up Linux I have to go to Samba to login on the other Windows machines, without that Linux and the printer are not shown on the Windows network.

                      If itś working I can print wireless to my linux machine usb printer. But sometimes the connection between the machines get lost for some reason or the prints go to the great sky above and never come back to get actually printed. Sometimes I ask 10 prints and I get 3 for no reason. The printline is still there in Q but the printer does not react on it.

                      I really don't get why this works so unstable or not at all and why I constantly must login to get a network connection.

                        Strangely Kubuntu or better Samba makes a MSHOME network folder but also a WORKGROUP. After pulling all out MSHOME and into WORKGROUP they got talking.
