How do I install software and get it to show up in the K menu?

I use apt-get as much as possible to install software, and this is great, but some applications are only available through download from the producer's website. I know how to install these (from source, or whatever is necessary), but is there a way to then add them to the K menu, and have them show up in the alt-F2 run command box?

Or is there a way to deal with .tar.gz downloaded apps using dpkg?

you can use dpkg -i to install .deb files, but most of the time you will have to add them to the kmenu using the menu editor (by right clicking on the "K" menu) the command will be what you put in when you type it in to krunner
