If I put certain dvd's in my drive such as "Office Space" or "Waiting" they are recognized and play with no problems but other dvd's such as Lord of the Rings or The Simpsons the drive spins with some odd sounds and never recognizes the disks? Any clue why this is?

Well, I had another problem that was left over from windows as well. One dvd drive didn't work....after some troubleshooting I found that the drive was bad...it wouldn't read anything. I replaced it with one I had laying around. Now the new drive will read the titles I was having problems with!!
I guess the problem is solved or solved enough to function.

Yep. Whenever optical drives fail they seem to become very finicky about which discs they like. This kind of symptom always leads me to suspect bad optical drive or bad media.
