Easy to use undelete program?

You never want it to happen, and then it happens anyway - someone delete a file they did not want to delete.

Do anyone know of a good and easy undelete program that runs on Kubuntu, but can undelete files on FAT, NTFS and as many Linux file systems as possible? Actually, the most important are the windows file systems...

Appreciate the suggestion, I know some distros like this already. Was actually asking for a program that I can install on my laptop that is now running Kubuntu 9.04 :-)

Makes it a lot easier than have to reboot my laptop to recover files from a memory stick from a camera (this is the most used option right now - friends know that I know a bit about computers, so they come here for advice or help).

I am looking for something like Recuva in Windows.

The Three Laws of computer use are:
1) Backup
2) Backup
3) Backup

You could set your delete option to direct your delete commands to the Trash Can, but the trash can won't accept large GB files. They will stay in your trash can until you "Empty" the trash, or you can "Restore" them.

Ehh........ mmm.... uuhhh...... I really do not know how to respond to this... Anyone with a suggestion? Other than Maybe I am missing something here because of the language. Is it a joke? I find jokes, irony and sarcasm the most difficult in foreign languages...

One doesn't need a GUI for TestDisk/PhotoRec.
The How-To at the TestDisk site is excellent.
It's fairly straightforward. The hard part is sorting out all the files that those two programs recover for you. Most people have all sorts of common file extensions deleted all over their hard drive (doc, odt, jpg, wmv, mpg, txt, etc.).
To find odt files, search for zip files.
And so on -- all explained at the site.

Absolutely. I have used Photorec to do a big recovery for a friend that had a crash on a harddisk in the middle of reformatting one partition and lost all partitions... Worked very well.

So I know that it works without a gui. The question was if anyone know a gui for it, not if you need a gui or not

I took a quick look at both programs and it seems both are CLI. I was hoping to find a GUI program or at least a GUI for a CLI program.

No joke.

It is very difficult to restore deleted files in Linux, ESPECIALLY if you happen to save one or more files after you've deleted a file.

The best way to restore a deleted file is to insert the DVD(s) containing the backup of all files on your system and copying the deleted file from the DVD to the HD. With memory sticks getting up to 8 and 16GB it is probably easier to back up to a USB memory stick than to a DVD. DVD's and CDs are not very reliable, especially over time, so it is prudent to make two or three backups and save one of them off site, incase of fire or theft on the primary site. Ditto with memory sticks.

Once, after chrooting into a partition containing an instance of Kubuntu, after working, I accidentally deleted the entire Kubuntu OS on that partition (... Don't ask). And I had very important photos from a high school friend on it (not yet backed up). And my documents. Yet, with TestDisk/Photorec, I recovered all but one odt document (which I also had on flash drive backup and elsewhere).

However, GreyGeek raises a key point: Do NOT touch that partition (containing the lost file(s)) if at all possible until you can make a recovery attempt! Very important. (Reason: If you change/create files on that partition, the bits & bytes will be re-used, re-shuffled to make new files, and thus possibly overwriting/re-allocating the space occupied by your lost files, and, well, your lost files will truly be lost then!)

Ok. I thank everyone for well intended advice. Points taken, although I knew this very well before. I am not new to computers at all neither to Linux. I have used a lot of different tools for recovery, both in Linux, Windows and MacOS. And I know well the implication of continuing to use a disk where you have deleted files.

I can assure everyone that none of these things are of relevance to my question. But for anyone else that might read this, pay attention to the advice. It is good advice and should be followed.

I am sorry for making such a confusion in this thread. I should have specified this more:

I am only looking for tools with a GUI. No matter what your meanings are about a GUI for a job like this or for Linux at all does not really matter. This is what I am looking for. I have the CLI tools I need. Now I am looking for the GUI.

Any suggestions?
