New installation of Hardy Heron and.. Help ! - SOLVED !

My PC is fine but my partners's trusty iMac after 6 years service screen died horribly yesterday ! BSD Unix derivative aka OS X is brill ! but not much good with a dead screen !

And a utility PC used for HD cloning was pressed into service for emails etc. A spare HD put in it a lo.... Kubuntu now lives !

But...... its screen is a wide thingy and Kubuntu thinks its even wider with the vital K icon on the left hand side an inch off screen !

Now it said install the vital screen driver ! but then refused cos I wasn't in SU mode (admin mode ?)

Maybe is the screen driver was working the 'K' would come back.

Any thoughts on how to fix this ?

Easy steps please as I can get lost easily !

    Hi Tim

Could it be that the resolution is just too high?

Try alt+F2 (or right click on the screen and type run command) and in the resulting box try kmenu (at least I think it's that!)

You should be able to then access the system settings from the menu and adjust the resolution.

The panel is the bar at the bottom of the screen and in KDE3 it's called kicker. If it's missing, running the command Sithlord 48 has given you will invoke it.

If for some reason the resolution has been set too high by the system (which can happen) then the panel and kmenu are there but off screen. My suggestion ought to bring the menu (or at least part of it) into view so at least you can access the system settings to adjust the resolution.

I hate to correct you, but with Hardy that should be kcontrol - at least, it is on this installation.

So Tim, if you press <Alt> + <F2> and type kcontrol in the box, and press <Return>, you then need to navigate to ->Peripherals ->Monitor and Display and set it to maybe what the monitor is recommended to run at. I've got an Acer X193W 19", and it likes 1440x900.

              Have Fun.

Re: New installation of Hardy Heron and.. Help !

Many thanks for all the help !

                Now fixed !

The 'kicker' was there but I found Kmenu by moving the cursor off screen and 'fishing' for it.

Then under 'System' I looked in the hatdware drivers.

It was winging about the graphics driver and I clicked on a few things.

It down loaded what it needed and a reboot did what was needed !

K is now where it should be !

Alt / F2 with Kcontrol was also most useful !

I've learn a lot so thank you all for the guidance !

Not a problem, I've been on KDE 4 for about 8 months now and it's all too easy to forget things, especially at our age

By the way Tim, glad you fixed it
