Complete linux noob - help please

    Hey all I'm frazzled

I'm an experienced windows user and have built several computers from scratch. I just installed Kubuntu 7 hours ago thinking it would be simple, basically the same thing.

    HELP ME PLEASE!

    1. HOW IN THE NAME OF GOD DO YOU RUN A SIMPLE PROGRAM!?

I've tried running a few I've downloaded but I end up in Kate. Tried using the console but it seems that I don't have permission to do anything and I can't find anything in the root shell.

    2. How do you use the package manager to update/download extra programs?

3.Is there a really good Kubuntu for idiots type website?

That's just for starters. Like I said I'm frazzled. Have I started out with the wrong distro for a noob? If anyone knows of an easier startup distro please let me know.

I have to say that at this early stage I can see the appeal of Linux but I'm starting to look longingly at my windows xp cd. Not easy to just bin 12 years of experience.

Thanks that link really helped to start me up

I figured the reason I was so caught out was I was trying to install from source with zero experience.

The extra repositories really help, thanks a million
