5 consecutive crashes on mi first day as kubuntu user. HELP!

Hi, I am a total newbie from Argentina, this is my second day using Kubuntu and had a very bad beggining. I`ve totally removed Windows from my laptop, I really wanna go the open source way. I`m ready to learn, to be patient, to use the konsole. But I didn`t expected so many crashes on mi first approach! While I am using konqueror or prism, the system just crashes, mouse cursor moves but nothing happens. I have to force shutdown and resrtart the system. By the end of day one, i had to do this 5 times! i'm using K 9.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and WIFI connection. Hope you can help me. I`m not coming back to windows, thats for sure. Thanks!

    Welcome!

    Linux Lesson #1:

Linux is different than Windows -- when the screen "crashes" it does not mean the system crashed. Linux uses something called the X Server to display the graphical interface. It is possible to have some configuration problem with your X Server, that will make the screen crash, but the Linux OS is still running.

The next time this happens to you, press Ctrl-Alt-F1, and log in at the text prompt with your user name and password. Then enter
    Code:
    startx
and watch for messages. Possibly you will see error messages -- you need to make a note of what it says. Or, possibly the X Server will start again. If that happens, we need to learn more about what happens when it crashes.

There is a log file of X messages located at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. You might want to look at this and see if there are warnings or errors in the messages -- there should be a crash error in the list there.

I had the same problem when I started with Jaunty. After switching off desktop effects the count of the same crashes diminished from 3 per day to one per week. Try this at least till you solve it with dibl.
System Settings - Desktop - Desktop effects - switch off desktop effects.
I would like to see the real solution myself, as I am not satisfied with the current state.

Thanxs! It seems like a problem with Konqueror, I have been using firefox all day long without problems. i will check this out the next time it happens. Quick answer, by the way! Thanks both of you again!

It is not so easy solved as you stated. It's not a problem only with Konqueror.
I have the same experience like yours with Firefox with Emacs, which also never crashes, so I think that this thing does not happen to GTK+ software. But there is still a lot of Qt4 software here that will crash till KDE programmers repair it or somebody finds out a workaround.

No, It` wasn`t. It has just crashed again. I was running on battery and when I plugged to the wall, it freezed. I tried ctrl+alt+f1 but there was no response. Any other suggestion?

If you can repeat that behavior, you will have proven that there is a problem with your hardware. The power supply in your notebook is supposed to handle the switchover from wall power to battery, and back again, without either cutting the power or surging the power on the motherboard.

I did a quick google for particular problems with that model, but found nothing apart from a few posts complaining about short battery life.

                Ideas.
                1. Check your log files Kmenu > Application > System > System Logs Viewer OR /var/log
There should be some information about what stopped or why something stopped

                2. Check Toshiba to see if there are any others with similar problems. Did you have any similar problems with Windows, or, have these problems only appeared since installing Kubuntu?

As previously mentioned are desktop effects turned off?

This can be quite important as an Xserver crash can seem as if the whole system has packed up.

I am assuming that your dell 1525 has an intel graphics card? The video drivers for the intel chip are not too good at the moment and if my experience is anything to go by desktop effects can have a huge effect on its stability. It seems Intel + linux + desktop effects =pain at the moment I'm afraid.

Also consider whether to enable unsupported updates from within your package manager which should give you a newer version of the kernel (probably not that important) and an updated graphics driver (more so).

Re: 5 consecutive crashes on mi first day as kubuntu user. HELP!

Notes, that I hope may help:
                    - I have almost the same hardware with the same crashes, I think the same problem
                    - When it crashes no keybord combination works - only cursor can be moved
                    - It can crash from any reason, mainly starting some KDE programs, for example System Settings, Krusader, Kate etc. and Opera too. Never Pidgin, Emacs, Firefox. I think plugging (which h.cosas describes) starts some KDE program too, so it crashes as usual with the start of some KDE program.
                    - The crashes never happened in Gutsy, Hardy or Intrepid and there were 3 crashes first day with Jaunty and next days too, till I found on Internet that switching off desktop effects partially helped. I live with it more than a month.
                    - No unsupported updates
                    - I think The Liquidator described the real reasons of this problem, mine and h.cosas's too and I am looking forward to video driver update.

thanks to all you guys! I`m trying on disabling desktop effects right now. Now I have a new issue. Suddenly, my Laptop stopped detecting WIFI connection. I have a router at home but I can't see my connection on the network manager. Yesterday, I moved my laptop for the first time to another workplace. When I came back home, I could't connect any more. Right now I'm connected to the router via ethernet.
I'll surf the forums looking for the same issue but if you have any suggestion, just let me know. Thanks one and again!

What are you using to connect, is it the standard network manager, or are you using wicd?

Also you haven't accidentally turned off WIfi have you (by hitting Fn +F")?

First the network manager, then I installed wicd but it won't detect anything. It seems like a hardware issue, that right?

If it worked yesterday, by rights it should today.

Did you do an update yesterday?

Have you got the package linux-restricted-modules installed?
