problem running internet in kubuntu 9.04

Hi. I'm dual booting Kubuntu 9.04 with Windows vista. I'm using a wired internet and my settings for the same are
IP Adress: 10.148.0.142
Subnet Mask: 255.255.254.0
Default getaway: 10.148.1.1

DNS: 10.10.1.2

Proxy settings

HTTP, HTTPS and FTP: 10.10.3.16
Port: 3128

These settings run perfectly fine on Windows vista and that is where I'm using internet from. For ubuntu, I made a new connection in Wired and filled these settings in the corresponding boxes and filled the MAC address as the one given by 'ifconfig eth0'. But still, the internet isn't working in kubuntu.

When I ping google, or any other address, it says 'Connect: Network Unreachable'

Please tell my how can I run internet on my Kubuntu

maybe theres a gui solution but at home i need to set manually the connection since... dapper :S (i think that is the modem)
the funny thing is that never got problems with the live cds

try adding to /etc/networking/interfaces

iface eth0 inet static
address XXX
netmask XXX
network XXX
broadcast XXX
gateway XXX
dns-nameservers XXX XXX

(replace XXX with the corresponding values)

and for the proxy... not sure, ttys work with one variable and the desktops with others (not used for all the programs too)
try the system settings to set the proxy (may work for KDE apps)

Ok, I started following Detonate's guidance but now when I have removed network manager, ifconfig is not showing eth0 any more, which it was showing earlier. what do i do?
ifconfig now just shows lo

See man ifconfig.

ifconfig only shows active interfaces. To see all interfaces, use ifconfig -a.
