I have to admit that in some sense I will always be a newbie. There are always new things to learn and new areas to explore. And for me today, it is encryption.
In Kmail and other places there are mentions of encryption. And as I saw some posts about it on the internet, I thought it might be a good idea to explore a bit.
I found KGpg, a nice tool to organise things, and I found some pages describing how to use it technically. But nothing about the philosophy behind it/best practices. ANd how do you combine it with Kmail and other applications?
What type of encryption should you use? Seems like there are several ways to Rome here.
How do I use it in my daily life with as little hassle as possible?
I understand there is something about signing an e-mail to make sure it is from me. I also understand that you can encrypt the whole e-mail to stop someone from reading the content (if I can avoid sending "postcards" all the time, I would prefer that - not that I have anything to hide, but I actually put my physical letters in an envelope...)
What will be the practical implications to this? I can see one problem - I am away from my pc and use another PC to access my mail through web. Then it will be impossible for me to read it because of the encryption?
A lot of questions, but I hope someone can answer some of them...
Edit: When opening and identity for modification to add encryption, I get that certificate manager could not be started. What is it, and how do I make sure it is installed?
There are several areas of passwords/encryption/identities etc. Kwallet, encryption plug-in in Kopete, signing e-mails in Kmail and encrypting the mails just to mention some... Are these different apps talking together? How can I make sure I use the same encryption in all? I need less things to worry about, not more...
