Can't connect to LAN

Can't connect to LAN.

I'm working with some others on a project and we want to share a network folder. We're using just a plain network switch with no dhcp. I've manually set my eth0 connection (wired) to a proper IP address, but I cannot connect. The other's seem to connect fine with their Windows computers. Can someone help me through this maybe step by step? Is there a firewall or something I have to disable?

What machine are you using? Laptop/Desktop? What network card? Make / Model ?
also post the output of

uname -a

to see if someone can help.
