Java woes

Hi All
Running Kubuntu 6.06 Dapper.
trying to install java for firefox. tried doing this
http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/get.html
to install everything and the install script hangs halfway though, no error message I saw a post elsewhere that said run it twice , I tried this but no discernable effect.
I also tried installing it using adept
however j2re1.4 for firefox says it's broken and the others refuse to install too both sun and blackdown

ANy ideas on how i can proceed.
