Blocked updates in Package Manager... What should I do?!?

Since upgrading to Jaunty, the updates run through the package manager. Now, since a week, I keep getting messages about 4 blocked updates (it shows a red "X" before the updates).

    These are the updates:
    linux-headers-generic 2.6.28.11.15 (amd64)
    linux-restricted-modules-generic 2.6.28.11.15 (amd64)
    linux-generic 2.6.28.11.15 (amd64)
    linux-image-generic 2.6.28.11.15

Can anyone tell me how I can get these updates? In the package manager there is no way to "unblock" those.

BTW: I do have a quad core amd, so the 64 bit is right.

in a terminal, please run these commands:

    sudo apt-get update

    sudo apt-get upgrade

and post the output. Hopefully that will tell us what's going on. I'd expect some sort of dependency that can't be satisfied for some reason.

I don't read Dutch, but I'm sure that says that the kernel-headers package for 2.6.28.11.15 is being held back. That means that one of its dependencies is not satisfied yet. This situation will change in the coming days, and the kernel images and the header packages will all be released at once.

            Maybe try
            Code:
            sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
What this all means is that a new linux kernel is in the works, but not all of the parts have been posted to the repositories yet. When all the parts are there, the upgrade will work. Until then, your system should be working fine.

              heh!

OK, that means us mere mortals do this once per day and in a day or two, the message will go away and the new kernel and its supporting packages will be installed on our systems:

              1. Make sure our package database is clean and error-free:

              Code:
              sudo dpkg --configure -a

              2. Bring apt current with the available updates:

              Code:
              sudo apt-get update

              3. Download the updates, including dependent packages:

              Code:
              sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

              4. Review the packages on the list, and exercise a little judgment about whether all are appropriate and needed. If all are OK, then choose "Y" and they will be installed.

In the case of a kernel upgrade, the boot menu will be automatically updated. For folks with a proprietary video driver, it won't work on the new kernel until the driver is re-installed.

That was extremely helpful!! Thank you for your patience!!

So what you are saying is: it's not ME causing the packages to be witheld (because I messed up my system), but it's more or less an announcement on a package soon to be released for update...?

update: Dibl, seems like that update came today... I tried your sequence of linux commands in the terminal and the
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
                  did the trick!

Thank you and also thanks to doctordruidphd!!

Just curious, but if the proprietary driver does not work with the new kernel, then won't the video be pretty much hosed until the driver is re-installed? If so, wouldn't it be just a tad bit difficult to re-install the driver blindfolded?

Only the X server -- the graphical mode -- is hosed. The tty terminals (Ctrl-Alt-F1 - F7) work fine in character mode.

No, not if you (a) have your downloaded driver saved in a known location, and (b) know how to install it from the console.

Ah. It's not every day I do this sort of thing ...

Also, a hearty thanks to you and to doctordruidphd for your help re: blocked updates. To date I've been getting my updates by means of "KDE Control Module." Convenient, but inflexible.

                        Best regards,

                          You're very welcome.

Probably the sooner you master updating and installing via the Konsole, the more successful you will be with your system. Here's a routine update of your system:

                          Code:
                          sudo apt-get update
                          Code:
                          sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If you see strange, worrisome error messages, first make sure your package database is clean and current:

                          Code:
                          sudo dpkg --configure -a

Then sometimes you simply need to wait a few minutes and repeat the process -- updating of repositories and Internet connectivity/congestion can sometimes result in an inability of apt-get to validate all the new packages, so you'll see an "unable to retrieve" sort of message. Just try it again in a few minutes.

Do observe what is going on -- apt-get's messages will tell you just about everything that it is going to do, before you accept it, if you observe the messages.
