Streaming video with firefox--is it possible?

I go to websites that embed .asf/.asx streams, as well as some which use .rm.

When I switched to Kubuntu and installed firefox, none of these worked: I get a page that says plugins are required, and when I click "install plugins" I get "Unknown plugin."

What can I do? My friend is starting to dislike linux because it "can't stream my favorite video sites."

Flash-based sites like youtube etc are just fine after installing the 'flashplugin-nonfree' package.

    Any help?

Have you tried some medibuntu stuff?
    http://www.medibuntu.org/

Maybe the VLC or mplayer firefox plugins will work after you get medibuntu installed.

I am sorry I can't be of more help.

Which one of the medibuntu packages should I install? (I don't see anything with firefox or plugins?)
      Here's the list:

Ah, look. I found some examples. This site lists media player plugins for Firefox in jaunty. But it's unclear, and I have a few questions:
        1. Which of these plugins (if any) should I install to play .asx/.asf (windows media) streams in firefox?
        2. Can I install these plugins on top of each other? If so, which takes over in the browser?
        3. I presume I would also need the helix plugin for my .rm streams?
        4. Is the repository they're referring to in Kubuntu? (I enabled restricted, universe, and multiverse.)
        5. Will these work in Kubuntu?

          I don't know

          Yes
          3. I presume also need the helix plugin for my .rm streams?
Can't hurt. You can also get realplayer for linux (medibuntu)
          4. Is the repository they're referring to in Kubuntu? (I enabled restricted, universe, and multiverse).
          Yes
          5. Will these work in Kubuntu?
Yes, ubuntu and kubuntu are identical under the hood.

Which one of the medibuntu packages should I install?
          libdvdcss2
          mplayer
          non-free-codecs
          realplayer
          w32codecs
          w64codecs (if you have a 64bit system)

I hope that helps. But as I never play .asx streams I don't know.

Can you send me a link to one of your streaming sites?

@gabe, follow #9 on the link in my signature -- that will solve 95% of multimendia issues.

If you're all about BBC and RealPlayer, that's a special case, but we can work it.

              Can you check these out?

All reportedly need WMP11 or realplayer apparently (but I don't know about that last one--I think that's WMP too).

Before I commit to following that whole tutorial, I just want to double check with you incredibly knowledgeable fellows to see if this is the kind of thing that will work.

Did that, and now I have the software update telling me that there are 4 blocked updates. How do I unblock them so that they are applied?

If none of the recommendations works for you, try this simple method:
Install mediaplayerconnectivity Firefox plugin and watch video in external programs like VLC
Kubuntu 16.04 on two computers and Kubuntu 17.04 on DELL Latitude 13
