Re: resolution issue on kubuntu 8.10

        Hmmmmm.

Well, I'm not happy about the problem accessing the repositories -- although the problem appears to be limited to the archive repo, which is not relevant to your video driver issue.

OK, so, with nvidia-gls-96 installed, can you run Alt-F2 "kdesudo nvidia-settings"? If so, what does the "X configuration" screen look like? Can you change the resolution to 1024x768? Leave the refresh set on "auto". Use the "Save to X Configuration File" button in the lower right corner to save it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

I wont be going to the office for 3 more days.. as tomo its may 1st and then its the weekend..

so will reply on monday morning.. sorry for the delay :|

IIRC i did run nvidia-settings.. it still gave me a prompt saying "You appear to not be using the nvidia driver ... "

and the instructions did include to run nvidia-xconfig which was removed .. so i didnt know what to do..

Re: resolution issue on kubuntu 8.10

That particular Quadro chip is a rare one apparently -- Google doesn't find much. However, I turned up this on Ubuntu forum:

            http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1008690

which interestingly shows (post #9) that the 177.xx driver supports a number of Quadro NVS chips including some models tantalizingly close to yours. Since nothing else seems to be working, why don't you try uninstalling the nvidia-glx-96 package, which I unfortunately misspelled in my prior post, and install the nvidia-glx-177 package? Just a shot in the dark, really -- I guess we're learning why the nVidia site shows no Linux drivers for it .... :P

but when i tried to install the drivers through the envygt tool..

it shows the 173/7 and the 180 series as not compatible..  its in the 13th post in this thread

We seem to be chasing a phantom here, but I'd like to see you try this:

                1. Run EnvyNG and use it to "Remove" or "Uninstall" the proprietary driver.

                2.
                Code:
                sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia*
                3.
                Code:
                sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-177
                I'll cross my fingers.

I just used Nvidias web page to see what drivers they recommend an it is the newest, 180.51.

i got a pop up saying 'you are using restricted drivers and is not supported' or something like that..

i clicked on use the 96 driver and restarted the system..

Re: resolution issue on kubuntu 8.10

Apparently this is a fairly common problem and seems to be related to KDE 4.x and has been reported on nvidia. Radeon & Intel graphic chipsets. The common consensus is that it is a KDE bug & playing with drivers etc probably will not cure it.

In my case, nvidia chipset, it started when upgrading from KDE 3.5 -> 4.2 in Kubuntu 8.1, I wish to use 1024*768 resolution but it always starts in 1280*1024. Others have reported that they wish to use 1280*1024 but it starts up with 1024*768 ! Upgrading to 9.04, which otherwise went very smoothly, has only preserved the problem.

It is a simple matter to open Systems Settings & then reset the resolution but is a bit of a pain on every system boot.

If you want further info, try the 9.04 Software & Support forum as there are plenty of threads on this one.

                      Regards

Re: resolution issue on kubuntu 8.10

It looks to me like it correctly installed the 96.xx driver. But I have never seen that "nvidia-auto-select" mode deal before. I take it if you click on "Auto" for resolution, and set it higher, you either don't get more choices, or else they don't actually save to the xorg.conf file? If that's the case, then I think you're outta gas with this driver. For one last attempt, replace the "Option" "metamodes" line in your xorg.conf file with this one:

                        Option "metamodes" "1024x768 +0+0"

Save it and reboot to see what you get.

If that doesn't help, then the conclusion is, this is as good as it gets with the 96.xx driver.

I only know of 4 more things to try, namely the other 4 nVidia drivers:

                        - 71.86.09
                        - 173.14.18
                        - 180.51 as per mando-hacker's post
                        - 185.18.04, the most recent Beta driver

                        Download them from here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...5eb04&t=122606

I don't know that any of them will work -- that model of nVidia chip appears to be in the group that the 96.ss driver is for. So, I think this is a little desperate. I would use the downloaded nVidia installer, as I assume EnvyNG will not allow you to select them for that chip. Here's the procedure:

                        http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...4892#msg164892

While you're visiting the nvnews site, search for your Quadro and see if anyone has posted anything useful for it.

                          1. i am on ubuntu 8.10 ..  not on 9.04 ... and do not / cannot upgrade to 9.04

                          2. if it were just an issue of resetting the resolution to the desired one in system settings > display ..  i would be glad to do it everytime i boot and would not have posted it on the forum..  please do see the pic ive posted as it shows that there is not resolution higher than 640 x 480

@dibl will try that and post back

I have to disagree, in part, phil. terrordrone's Quadro NVS 280 is a rare chip, at least as far as I can determine in searching for it. For example, I dare you to find a Linux driver for it on nVidia's support site.

Moreover, although posts about nVidia driver issues have always been common, I don't find many that won't work when the correct driver is installed.

It may be simple, but it's the wrong thing to do, if you have installed a proprietary nVidia driver! You have to use "nvidia-settings" to adjust the resolution, and if you want to make the adjustment permanent, you have to open nvidia-settings in root mode, i.e. Alt-F2 "kdesudo nvidia-settings", adjust the resolution, and then use the "Save to X Configuration File" button to make it permanent.

i tried setting the metamodes to 1024x768 and rebooted .. its still the same

is there any way i can get back to using the 'nv' driver coz.. i was getting atleast 800x600 in that.. now im reduced to 640x480 and its very difficult to work

the nv driver is still installed..

im leaving from office now.. so if there is anything to try out.. i can do it only tomo..

I took that dare and it was simple I opened nvidia.com, selected the download->download drivers menu and using the drop down selected Quadro,Quadro NVS series,Quadro NVS 280, and hit search. It showed
