Then why is Medinbuntu not working ?
in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/, I have medibuntu.list, which is

I did the two steps required on Medibuntu website, to no avail.
I also added the lines above to sources.list, no change neither.
with every time $sudo apt-get update in between.

btw I noticed in Adept, when I do 'fetch current package list', in the quickly scrolling list, some of them show FAILED (especially the translated-en_GB ones) though medibuntu show ok.

Though I cannot find skype in Adept, I tried $sudo aptitude install skype and it found broken packages and unmet dependencies. This was not detected before. It looked strange so I didn't install Skype. What would you recommend ?

I meant to type "should down your interfaces". To do that you would run
sudo ifdown ra0
As for commenting you should comment all but lo. The lines
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
should remain , always. I would say forget about adept, synaptic, and kpackagekit. If you want to get things stable use aptitude, at least till you know the system is in decent shape.

You should run
sudo aptitude update
before you try to install anything. When packages fail to download it is usually because they have been replaced by newer version and you have not updated. The other common problem is that the servers may be too busy to respond. Today, with the release of Jaunty, they are busy.

You ask why medibuntu fails but I don't know why you think it fails. If something fails it is helpful if you post exactly what you ran and what the error message was. Just cut and paste it.

ok, I'll try aptitude. no GUI I guess.
Skype installed (so medibuntu must be working) and some broken packages & unmet dependencies fixed on the way.

I thought there was a repository problem because I got some FAILED in 'fetch current packages' (which I think is an update). When I do $sudo aptitude update, I get links preceded by get, hit or ign, but I couln't find on the internet what it was.

Tried to install wicd but aptitude couldn't find it. Here are the results of commands $aptitude update and $aptitude install wicd.

That should get it. I went to Jaunty so fast I never learned that wicd was not part of the Intrepid. It appears that your system is now cleanly updating, and the directions to get wicd are pretty clear. You will get a message about trusting a source for which you don't have a key, but it is probably OK to allow that.

wicd installed.
It detect my network but I can't get it to connect.
What should be 'WPA supplicant driver' (wext|hostap|madwifi|atmel|ndiswrapper|ipw|ralink legacy) ? As I have a ralink driver, should it be ralink ? I tried with WPA passphrase and sharedkey and with wext and ralink, no sucess, it tries to get an IP from my network but doesn't get one, though the wifibox is on 'accepting new computer' mode.

was trying the atmel one. 'validating authentication', no success, when suddenly black screen with not-moving pointer.
after some I forced shutdown, then back on again.
just before login screen, black screen again with not-moving pointer (though not the same pointer status). oh, and status leds (caps lock and num lock) blinking.

lots of surprises !!
I got this quite frequently ... every new program or install I try, I have to force shutdown after some problem. is it only me ?

Ah, yes. When I wrote the howto I forgot to mention that wicd needs a daemon It could have been started doing a sudo /etc/init.d/wicd start but a reboot takes care of that

Did you down the interfaces and comment them in /etc/network/interfaces before trying to configure them with wicd? The settings you need are determined by the settings of your access point (modem/router?). I think you have more than one problem and will probably need to work on them one by one. If is possible that the wireless driver is giving you some trouble, possibly even the lockups, but you are close to a stable network and when that is resolved and no longer changing you will be more able to detect other problems.

must be sth else because after reboot, I can't connect neither. (attempts to connect only last for 1 min with 'wext' or 'ralink legacy'. It stops sharp if I try another (or most of others) driver supplicant)

how about this : in my readme file when I compile the driver, there was two options
- build for being controlled by NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant wext function (-> do this and this before $make)
- build for being controlled by WpaSupplicant with Ralink Driver (-> do this and that before $make)

looks like I have to remake my driver but which option should I use ?

[since I need Internet, I am on the other computer, by the box and detect a 100% strength network.

You never told us what you put in interfaces to get the interface to work but I expect it was the wpa lines, which means you are using wpa-supplicant. The interface being ra0 makes me think you are using Ralink, whatever that it. so I would try the second choice. You also never said if you commented the ra0 stanza in interfaces. From what little you have told us I think I would be trying other things before rebuilding the driver.

really sorry, I thought I told all this. I commented all lines but the ones with 'lo' as you told me to. And I did mention ralink below, as soon as the problem began to focus on the wireless.

now it's connected, but I don't know why, because I didn't tried anything new. (I am quite organized when I do tests)

I use WPA, but I don't know what WPA_supplicant is.
