    installing new hardware

    Is there a application like add and remove hardware like that in windows? I need to add a us robotics modem to my system for fax.

    No, there is no specific installation program.
    When you plug it in, depending on what type of device you have, you may get a message from device notifier that something has been detected.
    Again, depending on what device it is, you may need to add a module to the kernel to make it function. USR generally provides good documentation on how to do that. If you need more help, we would need to know more about what device you are trying to use.

          Whether internal or external you modem is supported by the kernel using its tty devices. Youwill not need a specific driver for it, but you will need to configure something to dial and or answer and so forth. There are numerous options and there may be someone on this forum who can give you explicit directions, but youcan start by running
          aptitude search fax
          and looking at the software options it presents you.
