OO "document opened in read-only mode

I am in Kubuntu 8.04 and using Open office 3.0. When I try to edit a Calc file I saved last year I get
"document opened in read-only mode" I have checked permissions and they are all read and write for "albert". What can I do to fix problem? I have tried saving to another name and trying again but no go. Any help appreciated,

Simplest option first:

With a document open go to tools\options\openoffice.org\security.

Is "open document in read only mode" checked?

This happened to me just yesterday. I opened a file in Calc that was in a backup folder. When I could not edit it, I saved it to my home folder, from where I was able to open and edit it.
