    freeze on start up

    hp 533w
    2.7 ghz p4
    1gb ram
    20gb hdd
    kubuntu only

Ok, so I start up Kubuntu, type in my username and pass...

If I click on the HD icon as soon as it appears, it brings me to my desktop, if I wait longer it freezes as the other icons try to load.

WHEN/IF I get to my desktop the system almost instantly freezes, with the exception of my cursor, which can move about but do nothing more.

Heh -- where did you find an instruction to do THAT?

Try putting your hands in your pockets, until the desktop comes up by itself. THEN you can click something.

the desktop never comes up at all if i wait on it. the live cd does the same thing but the live cd works just fine on my compaq I think its a driver problem but I dont know enough about kubuntu to get it up and running

OK, that's probably a video driver issue -- review #2 in the "Top 20" link in my signature, and also the one further down on "proprietary drivers". If you want more help on it, you'll have to get to a console (Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F1 should get you a command prompt where you can log in) and run
        Code:
        lspci -v
and then post the output here so we can see what your graphics chip is.

              Re: freeze on start up

I think i found the problem

timer not connected to IO-APIC upon booting

I will try to update the bios and see what happens
then get back to you on it
