I've messed with Kubuntu off an on since 6.x and I like how it works, just being in school I do not have time to trial and error software to get stuff needed for school done, so I'm usually stuck on Windows doing most of the work.
Things are finally slowing down and would like to install Kubuntu 8.1 on a Flash drive (pen drive, jump drive, what you would like to call it
)
I've read guides on pendrivelinux.com and had no trouble following them, but when it comes to the step to boot from the drive for the first time, the screen stay black saying something about the DMI Pool. I usually see this right before it says Boot From CD when I use an OS installation cd or live CD.
The guides I've followed repeatedly (making sure I didn't make a simple mistake like a wrong keystroke or such.)

I am currently using a Vista OS (yes I selected the makebootable.bat file as run as administrator)
I have done a test to see if the computer can boot from usb (strangely the pc sees the usb devices as hard drives and not removable in the boot up sequence when I hit F10 when starting up.) http://www.pendrivelinux.com/testing...compatibility/ And this did work fully, just didn't do the memory test.
The usb memory I've used so far, don't have any normal memory sticks that I can use because used for work or school projects: Sandisk II 4GB through a Sandisk MicroMate usb, and I've got a iPod Vid 30Gig (reading just over 27G and on FAT32) Both been formatted, haven't tried the HP tool just yet. I did use the USB boot test with the sandisk and worked fine, but won't boot Kubuntu from it.
