Kde Desktop

I recently started to have trouble adding an application to the Desktop.
When I right click from K menu and choose add to desktop. It puts the Icon in the upper left hand
corner. If i Add another program to desktop it put it on top of the previous one. When i look under /home/user/desktop the items are not there.
If I drag and drop the icon to the Desktop it works ok.

I also set-up another User and the same thing happens there.

What version of Kubuntu and what version of KDE?

Forgive me because I am on 4.2, but I believe Add to Desktop and Drag-drop yield completely different/separate results... one is a "traditional" desktop shortcut (drag-drop) and the other (add-to) is a plasmoid... so just be aware of that.

IIRC the "add to desktop" feature only works properly in from 4.2.0 onwards.
