    KDE responds become slow

hi, i'm just using kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.2. at first, the KDE works amazingly..but after a while, it becomes slower and need at least 3 sec to respond on mouse click. i've update my kernel n my video card driver. however, it still cannot solve the problem.

    hopefully someone could help me..

    PC spec:
    - intel core 2 duo 2.0ghz
    - 2 gb RAM
    - 256mb Nvidia 9300 gs

Anything suspicious looking in your Process Table (System Monitor)? A used to get a whole bunch of a single process (scim-gtk-something) that would happen during a slow down like you describe.

Or, anything taking 80%+ of your CPU? It could be an index that is building...

    You can also just
    Code:
    top
into konsole to see the processes... keep that open and watch to see if something is popping up.

Below are some threads about Nepomuk... that is probably your problem.

Under the K Menu, under Favorites you probably have a System Settings link... go to that and on it the advanced tab... from there open the Desktop Search icon. In the basis settings uncheck "Enable Neopuk Semantic Desktop". Also, you can disable the Strigi Desktop File Indexer if you think this is causing problems.

Give that a try and report back if it is causing any unforeseen problems. Good luck.

          Re: KDE responds become slow

I will bet the problem is your NVidia video card.

KDE 4, expecially 4.1 was so slow it was ridiculous. I would click on something and the screen would freeze for half a minute. After a lot of searching I found many posts that talked about problems with KDE and NVidia video cards.

After weeks of trying to fix it I finally swapped an ATI card from another computer I have, with the NVidia card in the computer I run Kubuntu.

          Problem solved!

It seems it was never clearly stated that top show nepomuk using 97% of your CPU. In other words it is using your whole computer and leaving very little for you.

tq for ur reply.. hve not been online for such a long time. i have disable the nipomuk, but then it still responding quite slow. however, it speed up the loading time when opening application..

btw, about the vdeo card driver, i think the nvidia driver that i used now is the best so far.. have tried using ATI driver, but it's not compatible and windows turns blank..

is there any other suggestion what i need to do?
