Both Adept and Synaptic crash!

Hey. I recently installed Kubuntu 8.10, and after a few headaches figuring out how to install both my graphics card drivers, and wireless drivers, I finally had my un-updated version of Kubuntu up and running. That was, until I decided to update my system... after the update I had to reinstall my NVIDIA Graphics driver, but, since that was probably NVIDIA's error, I forgave Linux. This, however, is ridiculous, and I beg the developers to make their updates with more care... or at least give them more extensive tests in order to fish out the bugs.

Adept & Synaptic both crash giving me the same error. They display it for a couple of seconds and then die..

APT Error. Context:
  The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened., 
  Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_intrepid-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages (1)

Any help on this? Please, otherwise from this unexpected unstability on my system, which pisses me off, I'm in love with Linux (Ok, GNU/Linux :P). Any help on solving this would be greatly appreciated. After all, I'm just an Ubuntu noob.

I installed a few apps (Firefox, Blender 8, a few wireless management tools, and upgraded some of the software. Somehow Synaptic snuck in there and that's how I found out it was a general error, and not some sillys Adept crash). Then, I clicked on that Gear which notifies you of updates (I guess it's the Adept update manager), and installed all 284 of them, including a new Linux kernel version, which is what upset my NVIDIA Drivers.

Is that all you need to know?

This really has nothing to do with which package manager GUI you are running. It is part of the apt system that underlies all of them. Each repository should have a file like the one mentioned in the error message. Try
ls -l /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_intrepid-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages and see if the file exists and what permissions it has. Try running "sudo aptitude update" and see if it works after that.

The permissions and size of the file appear appropriate and you are running it as root so almost certainly the file is corrupt and not parsing correctly. Delete it and run aptitude update again and it should be recreated.

Did you suffer a crash while updating at 6:31 PM on March 22?

Deleted, and tried to update. Somehow, the file is still there...

As for the crash, the whole update process went fine, save for the NVIDIA Drivers crashing.

EDIT: After reading the whole thing, I guess that my whole package managers etc. are all messed up...

Interesting. Just for completeness sake you could remove the file, then list it to make sure it is gone, but my guess is it is gone and there is a problem file on the server. I notice you are using en_AU and archive so that fact that I am having no trouble with us.archive is meaningless.

I expect this is a temporary problem with their server that will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, it might be slow but I expect you could change your archive to us.archive and it would work.

As root edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list. Use kate or whatever editor you like. You will see lines like
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-updates main restricted

although yours may say intrepid where mine says jaunty, and where mine uses http://us.archive.ubuntu.com your uses http://archive.ubuntu.com. Just add us. in this one line and update.

There's still parts that are downloaded from archive.ubuntu instead of us.archive.ubuntu, but there's no diffrence. Should I delete the entire buch of package lists?

Nvm. As I was toying around with the files and such, I noticed that the Package list files got updated to us.ubuntu, so I updated the rest of 'em save for securitu.ubuntu... and the canonical files.
