Installed for first time on Monday

On Monday I got all the parts for a new build. I've tried out both ubuntu and kubuntu before but never really been able to get them to work with my laptop. This is a desktop/htpc build. Everything seems to be compatible, but I'm still having a sound issue and have a couple other questions.

I have both onboard sound (HDA ATI SB VT1708B) and a Creative Xmod. Onboard sound is way quiet, but that's mostly a non issue because I'd rather use my xmod. The problem with that is a few programs are still trying to use the onboard sound. Specifically VLC and XBMC. Both are set to use 'default' sound device. System sounds, Amarok and Dragon player all work fine. I have added the line 'options snd_usb_audio index=0' to alsa-base.

My other questions are probably rather simple.

Is there a way to launch multiple applications together? Specifically Prism for GMail, Reader, Docs, and Calendar?

Also, is there a way to load external drives on startup? They're formatted FAT32 and before any program can use them I have to open Dolphin and select each drive.

I'm sure that must mean FAQ #15 or Item 15 in a beginners guide somewhere that I should have read. But how about being, you know, ACTUALLY helpful instead of just a number and an expectation that I pull it's meaning out of my ass? Tough to get mad at a guy when you're asking him for help, but then he doesn't have to be a dick about it either.

Oh, the first answer wasn't posted by a "dick". Your post was sophisticated enough that he probably assumed you were more knowledgeable than you are, hence the short reply. Personally, I am new to Kubuntu, too, and I found the URL above by Googling "Kubuntu 9.04 user guide".

You do observe correctly, but then again first thing you should have seen on forums is to PLEASE use Search and try to use it and then ask the question if there's nothing in there to help you.

Sorry Brent -- I thought the FAQs in my signature were more obvious than they apparently are.

BTW, I highly recommend the "mount by label" method that is described in the link on mounting and fstab.
