adept_installer crashes so can't install / un-install

I am trying to install cups software to be able to install a new Dell 1320c lazer printer to run on my self built PC which uses Kubuntu for AMD64.

I get following message with adept_installer after selecting to apply changes...

There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages.

with adept_manager I get the following message after selecting to apply changes...

adept_manager crashed causing signal 11 (SIGSEGV).

Sould I attempt to install CUPS printer install packages using Konsole?

In a terminal type sudo apt-get install synaptic

That will install synaptic, an alternative package manager that seems to have fewer issues. Then try it from there.

I have managed to remove adept-manager but still have adept-installer which seems to work with limited functionality (it let me remove adept-manager but I can't seem to install printer programs).

If you type sudo apt-get install synaptic

and then hit return you will be asked for your password. Type that in and hit return and you will then be working at the higher level, and you should be able to install.

If you get errors (indicated by the lock - probably caused by the earlier mis-fire) you ought to be able to clear that by doing a reboot.

Your error messages suggest you are running Feisty, which IIRC is 7.04. Is that right?

I think I may be with Feisty yes. I don't know for sure. I tried through Konsole terminal to check which Kubuntu version I am using by typing "cat /etc/issue". What came back was ubuntu 7.04.

Upgrades have not been working on my set up since the adept-installer became unstable (which occurred when I tried unsuccessfully to install Amaya so I could edit my website).

The end of life for Feisty (7.04) was October 2008, so it's no longer supported. I therefore strongly recommend you get a more up to date version of kubuntu.

Presumably, stability is key for you. In that case I would recommend 8.04.

Back up your home file/partition and do a new installation. You ought to be able to do a new install and save your home data (if it's in a separate partition) as both use kde3, but back up first just in case. I would not get 8.10 unless you are prepared to start completely from scratch and copy your backed up data to a clean home as kde 4 has significant differences to kde3.

Edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and every place you find feisty, replace it with gutsy. If you have files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d do the same with those. Then run

sudo aptitude update

followed by sudo aptitude -f full-upgrade

This should upgrade your system to gutsy, and will probably go without much trouble. You should then probably upgrade to hardy in the same way. At that point you should be good for a few months. Don't try to skip from feisty to hardy, take them in order.

I tried to find all feisty and replace with gutsy in the ect/apt/sources.list and ../sources.list.save and sources.list.d folders. I could not save these with the changes so I tried running the command you suggested without closing down the folders. If I try to save changes in ect file I get the following message:

The document could not be saved, as it was not possible to write to file:///etc/apt/sources.list.save.
Check that you have write access to this file or that enough disk space is available.

Then I tried to run the command:

sudo aptitude -f full-upgrade. I got the following message:

This aptitude does not have Super Cow Powers.

I get a kick out of Super Cow powers every time I see it. sudo is a command that allows you to run commands as root (like do as Super User). You need to use it every time you want to run a command as root, which includes installing and removing packages and editing the sources.list files. Usually you will do something like "sudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list" or "sudo aptitude update" but you can run "sudo -s" so that you get a root shell and can run numerous commands without typing sudo each time.

So try again to edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file, as root this time. Then when you are done, as root, run "aptitude update" to let your system download a new database of available packages. Then you want to tell it to install a whole new version of Ubuntu so use, as root,

"aptitude -f dist-upgrade"

I told you full-upgrade before, not realizing that your version of apt was before the change from dist-upgrade to full-upgrade. In newer version they are the same but dist-upgrade will go away. The -f tells aptitude to try real hard to find a way to fix any problems it encounters. Hopefully that will get you to Hardy.

Yesterday I finally managed, through your help, to download a new version of ubuntu. It took ages on the broadband connection (fairly remote situation) and eventually it seemed to end.

However the computer seems exactly the same as it was before. How do I check whether it is now on Hardy or still on Feisty?

When type cat /ect/issue into the terminal Konsole window I get back "ubuntu 7.04 \n \l"

Perhaps the new upgrade install got stuck or failed?

Actually I can now confirm that my version of kubuntu is not Gutsy because I just tried to install synaptic through terminal Konsole by typing
sudo apt-get install synaptic

It worked! YIPEEE

and as it churned away I noticed Gusty appearing instead of the old Feisty

So THANK YOU!

Now onto my second problem which is how to find a printer driver for Dell laser printers...

Any ideas?

Check in your printer database whether there is an entry for the Fuji printer, in which case install it. If not, you may care to look here:

Basically this gives you the location of a Redhat RPM for the driver. If you install a package called alien and follow the instructions on that page it will create a deb which you can install. Note that I have no knowledge of this printer so these instructions don't come with any money-back guarantee
