So when I attempt to start kubuntu (8.10 on kde 4.1 32bit), it will load as normal and bring me to the login screen, but after I enter my password, the screen simply goes black. I still have a cursor that moves around, but obviously there's nothing to click on since everything else is black. I dont think I did anything out of the ordinary before shutting down. So can anyone help me bring back kubuntu?

Oops, the guy right below me just posted with the exact same problem. Perhaps this is the result of a buggy update? Regardless, BSAB_80 has not found a solution yet either, so any help is appreciated. -

it's probably something to do with desktop effects that you need to disable. Have a look at this thread:
