BIG problem with Kubuntu 8.10!!

Hello.

I have a big problem with kubuntu. Almost everyday it freez and my desktop become messed-if i had a old graphic card (i dont know how to describe). I must push and hold my power button to shut it down (i dont have a restart button-laptop). I tried ctrl-alt-backspace, but it didnt work.

I use a nvidia 180 driver. I tried nvidia 177 driver on new installed kubuntu but it happend the same.

I have a Acer laptop with Nvidia geforce 8600m GT 512MB.

I use Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.1 -all updates- and compiz (compiz is not the problem because it happend without compiz.)

I hope someone can help me (im new at linux).

I had a similar problem with kubuntu 8.04
If I was patient it would start working again.

I finally nailed it down to Xorg hammering the cpu at random intervals.
I had a shell open with top running and just after the freeze had finished i noticed that Xorg was hammering the cpu at 100%

However, I have not had this problem with kubuntu 8.10, So I am unable to help you there.

hm..thats realy strange. I didnt had any problems with Kubuntu 8.04.

I hope someone can help me, i dont wanna always shut down my laptop, im scared that i dont break it.

I have the same problem, I press enter sometimes twice when it hangs during shutdown and everything is normal.

The problem is i cant shut down it normal. I must hold the power button, because it wont response.

Try pressing <Ctrl> <Alt> and <PrintScreen> at the same time then -- still holding down <Ctrl> + <Alt> press (in this order) r s e i u b.

It may be necessary to hold down each key for a couple of seconds, and if it doesn't work first time, try again.

I am not a nivdea expert but there seems to be a bug with that card:

I would suggest changing your post title to reflect your issue more directly.

Like:

problems with Nvidia geforce 8600m GT card and posting it under intrepid / hardware so the nivdea experts can see / have a look / help
