i couldn't because i ran a guided set up on them and when i went to install the new they were all called ubuntu so i wouldn't have knowing which to delete but i'll just download the cd and see how it goes

GParted Live CD will make everything clear for you, in terms like sda1, sda2, sdb1, sdb2, etc. In text and in graphics.

ok i sorted it i just loged into gos got gparted of synaptic package manager and used it to delete the partition it was on

OK, good.
Now you can do whatever you wish -- I forgot the program -- to install Xubuntu?
If so, go ahead and make a new partition using GParted Live CD, say ext3:
Highlight unallocated space.
Partition > New
Specify size and format (I think ext3 is OK, unless they recommend ext2?).
Then
