    i want to install a tar.bz2 file
    i typed ./configure
    i get that

    Have you remembered to navigate to where the tar is, using your terminal?

    Have you looked at:

    and
    2) http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installingsoftware

    ...as Psychocats says "The preferred way to install software in Ubuntu is to use the package manager, which you can access through Add/Remove or Synaptic" and "As a last resort, you can download a .tar.gz file"...
