    which codecs are installed?

    Hi,

I'm wondering how I can check which audio and video codecs are installed, if any? is there a tool around to check that?

prior to install any media player, should I install codecs? which ones?

    thanks

It depends what you want to do.

If you have Synaptic Package Manager you will be able to see any codecs that are installed.

    Generally you need:
    1) kubuntu-restricted-extras
    then:
Install the Medibuntu Repository. A two stage installation - a) install the repository b) get the GPG key (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu )
    2) win32codecs or win64codecs (whichever is appropriate)
    3) libdvdcss2 (decoder for commerial DVDs)
