I boot up kubuntu and then put in my user name and password and hit enter and it looks like it works for a second and then it returns to the sign in screen but does not say wrong user name or password. It's the right user name and password i know. I just installed it two days ago and it was my second time trying to log in when this happened.

Do you have samba installed? I had a problem the other day on my file server. If that's the case try boot up in rescue mode(ESC when grub starts and choose the second row in grub). Then write:
apt-get remove --purge samba
apt-get remove --purge samba-common -
