Installation question - yes, I did a "search" first

I'm trying to install Kubuntu onto an HP PIII from a CD a friend gave me (this CD worked for him).

I did the "check CD for defects". None found.

I did the memory check. Not sure how long I'm supposed to let this run, but after about 20 minutes there were no errors.

Upon booting from the CD, the Kubuntu screen comes up with it's progress bar. Then a grey screen with graphic swirls appears, with a KDE 4.1 little window, and one by one icons gradually appear in this window. One looks like a CD drive, one is tools, one is a globe, the next looks like a little screen, then (about 3 minutes later) my monitor goes black and it hangs that way. There's an arrow and black screen, the CD drive is blinking and thinking, and you can hear the CPU revving its engine. But nothing happens.

    What did I do wrong?

for that old p3 you should try kubuntu 8.04 instead. sounds like you have gfx problems and if the machines other hardware is as old as the p3 kde 4 is going to be rather slow

I would agree. My laptop did not like Kubuntu 8.10 very well. Granted, I was running from a LiveCD, but judging from other pre-KDE 4 versions of Kubuntu that presented well, at least KDE 4.1 is a no go for my PIII. I'll try 9.04, but if it's as slow, then Hardy will be my last Kubuntu and Ubuntu or Xubuntu may be my only recourse (at least among the *buntus).
