Trying to recover partitions formatted for Kubuntu

    Hi.

After trying Kubuntu and somehow screwing up my whole PC I'm trying to recover the partitions I made in Kubuntu for use in Windows. Someone advised me to boot into the live CD (Kubuntu 8.04) then at the terminal type gpartd.
I tried this but nothing happens other than the message
    bash: gpartd: command not found

Is there something I'm doing wrong there? I'd like those partitions back.

    Thanks

Installed GParted and it finds my 3 hard drives. The one in particular that had Kubuntu installed on it was a 250 gig drive with 5 partitions. Looking in GParted it says Partition 'unallocated' File System 'unallocated' Size '230 gig' Used '- - -' Unused '- - -'

Windows recognises the distinct partitions but can't do anything with the one's that were formatted to ext whatever it was!

Because you formated those partitions, all data that was on them is now gone. Were you expecting to be able to recover pre-Kubuntu data that was on those partitions or ....

Actually you are fine. Unlike Linux utilities, Windows is incapable of doing anything with Linux partitions. What you can do in Gparted is allocate a Windows filesystem (NTFS, Dos, Fat32, etc.) to any selected partition. Linux fdisk can do the same thing and you can do either from the Kubuntu LiveCD. Once allocated to any Windows filesystem, Windows can do anything you need to that partition. Just be careful in selecting the partition(s) to be modified.

Not sure what the exact problem statement is here.

You can recover deleted partitions by using TestDisk, even if you deleted/corrupted the MBR.

You can (usually) recover (most/almost all) data from partitions using PhotoRec, even if you deleted the partition or reformatted it (I have done it).

PhotoRec is part of TestDisk now.

My "how to" (=> experience/links) is here:
        RESCUE Partitions & Data
Data Rescue Links & Comments & Tips
TestDisk -- PhotoRec -- Knoppix (or other Live CDs)

Please post further questions back here on the regular forum.

          Q,

What is this "TestDisk" that you speak? Sounds like a good little "recovery" tool. I'm always looking for those!

Cool. So my Kubuntu USB stick can have this. Cool. I also have the Knopix DVD. Is it there by default?

                MoonRise --
yes, on Knoppix; also on GParted Live CD (right-click to get it).

                USB Live stick -- OK, BUT, make sure you have plenty of persistent space because it stores large folders of recovered files, which can fill up the stick quickly ("no space left on disk");

when in doubt, just try at a terminal typing
                  testdisk
                  or
                  photorec
                  to see if it's there;
                  on System Rescue CD, too

See my how-to, esp the last post on PhotoRec (which explains another way to install the latest version and use it, which I got from Christophe Grenier--TestDisk/PhotoRec owner).

The TestDisk site is excellent, too, for its tips and much step-by-step.

You can use dd to mess up your MBR and see how well TestDisk recovers/rebuilds partitions/MBRs.
For PhotoRec, I once deleted files and then reformatted the partition they were on, and still got back my files (almost all).

That's great! Thanks for the info on that and the "space" issue on USB.

My understanding is that the OP wants to use his FORMER Kubuntu partitions in a Windows installation. Windows has always had a hard time with partitions that were allocated to Linux filesystem types. Am I misunderstanding the OP's intent?

                          Thanks for the replies guys.

I knew why I formatted those partitions the data on them would be lost, I had no problem with that.

I was having a problem with getting those partitions back in use with windows though for some reason.

                          Testdisk

                          http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

was showing linux partitions even though I'd reformatted with windows to NTFS.

As you reformatted the partitions as NTFS, I'll assume that your Windoze is XP or higher?
