    Command Prompt / Loading programs

    Command Prompt / Loading programs

I am lost. Have you seen me? I loaded Kubuntu last night and this is my first experience with any flavor of Linux.

    1)  How do I install programs (Firefox, Flash.. and there will be more) that I download form the Internet? I heard that it would be from the command prompt.

    2)  How do in get to the command prompt?

    3) How do I get the computer, with Kubuntu to recognize a jumpdrive when I plug one in?

I will have many more questions in my new adventure. I am glad I found this website.

      1) Read the "Sticky" at the top of this forum! The link is http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3228.0

      2) Don't first try to install raw programmes you have downloaded from the internet. Use a package manager to easily get and install them. Either use Apt-get or Adept to download Synaptic which is possibly the best package manager.

      3) Download an automatic script to download and install a bunch of stuff eg Firefox, Flash, Acrobat etc. The Sticky will tell you how to install Automatix. The other common script is Easyubuntu - but install one or the other, not both.

Thanks for the great replies. The ALT+F2 got me into the command prompt and I installed firefox. I will following the links that were posted here and do some more reading up on my own. I am new to this OS, now with less than 1 day experience. Thanks for your time.

I'm thrilled that my Psychocats site made it in so many times, but a few clarifications are in order:

Actually, Ubuntu and Kubuntu are the same distribution. Kubuntu has a KDE desktop and Ubuntu has a Gnome desktop, but the file structure, package management, and installation are all the same.

Being a Kubuntu user myself, I try my best not to make the instructions Gnome-specific (I include kwrite, not just gedit, for example).

If you spot anything that appears to work in only Gnome, please let me know right away, and I'll fix it. Otherwise, I'm going to assume it's all good for both Kubuntu and Ubuntu.

The Psychocats link tells you also how to install ANYTHING. The difference is that the MonkeyBlog tutorial has screenshots, is focused (for now--the author assures me Kubuntu updates are pending) on Gnome, and mentions some features that are available only in Dapper (not Breezy).

Yup- your site is exellent source for kubuntu tutorials.

              Another is K U D O S (Kubuntu is a User-friendly Desktop OS)
              http://kudos.berlios.de/. (For 5.04 !!)

Most of the tutorials are for Ubuntu. There is only small difference (gedit /kwrite(kate) and sudo/kdesu..) but it's big when you are newbie.

D'oh. I put it wrong place

              Should be:
