Migrating from Windows ... Dolphin, Plasma questions

I've been trying to migrate from windows to kubuntu 8.1 after the death of my laptop, and have some questions:

    1) On my old computer, most of my folders were set to view as multicolumn list. I've found a way to emulate this effect in Dolphin through the "icons" view, but the icons are still monstrous and wasteful. Is there any way to get the "real" effect (through packages, etc)?

    2) Is there a way to get this multicolumn list in the "Desktop" folderview widget? Or anything not big, in general?

    3) I've noticed that some widgets that should open in the systray instead open in a new window. Is this a bug, or just me?

    Cheers,
    koli

You can make the icons in Dolphin smaller. Dolphin>Settings>Configure Dolphin>View Modes>Icons Tab>Icon Size

You can make the icons on the widget smaller. Widget>RIGHT CLICK FolderView Settings>Display>Icon Settings

You can put widgets on the Desktop or on the Panel. On the Desktop click on the "cashew". On the Panel RIGHT CLICK on the Panel>Panel Options>Add Widgets

Thanks. They've gotten smaller, but still pretty big.

Mine only allows me to "Show the desktop folder" and "Show a custom folder".

I should have mentioned, I tried that It seems like the network connections icon especially likes to do this.

...Actually, I've just found out that my systray has nothing in it, and I cannot put anything in it. Interesting. Removing and re-adding a new tray does nothing.

I'm running kubuntu 8.1, fairly fresh, and have yet to get all the updates Adept tells me to, I wonder if that has anything to do with my problems?

For the Desktop widget, you can as far as I know change the icon size but not folder view(I too prefer to have it like you but with folder info rather then rows)

Change the size in K-menu > System Settings > Appearance > Icons (Desktop/File Manager) on the right side is size:

This happens to me too, I get the Knetwork Manager icon on upper left side of the screen and I assume that's a bug. Looks like the icon prefer to be at a panel on top of screen rather then where I have a panel, at the bottom. Usually a restart of the system fix it, logging out of xserver usually don't fix this however.
I'm not sure why you don't have anything in the system tray .. I tried now and removed it.. dragged it across the desktop some and saw that some icons had trouble following, but when I put it in my panel they were there.
Try fire up some different applications and see if any thing pop up.

I suggest doing the updates. KDE 4.1.2+ add quite a bit of extra functionality and bug fixes to plasma. Right now I'm running 4.1.4 and there is quite a detailed configuration for the 'Folder View' plasmoid/applet (think 4.1.2 started it) and fixed a bunch of odd System Tray problems.

Also have a look a Krusader if you like a more powerful filemanager.(SPlit view orthodox)

Re: Migrating from Windows ... Dolphin, Plasma questions

Thanks for your help. My systray now works, and my folderview icons are smaller, at least. I'm downloading krusader now, I'll play around on that.

Something else has popped up though. When I have Amarok installed and I try and open the trash from the panel (or any file manajer thing from panel), Amarok opens and starts playing. I've looked through System Settings -> File Associations, but can't figure out what, exactly, to do. Uninstalling Amarok seems to work fine, but reinstalling just brings it back.

Also something happened, I'm not sure what (all I've modified recently was Amarok), and my display got screwed. Luckily, I've learned to keep copies of xorg.conf around
