Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libmagick9

    Hi Everyone,

I tried to install Xastir and received the error in the subject. So I guessed that I needed libmagick9 package and tried to install libmagick9-dev_6.2.4.5-0.6ubuntu0.8_i386.deb and received the same message when I tried to install it. I have Kubuntu 8.10 and I clicked on the file to install the package so I'm guessing I was using the built-in installer. I know I'm way over my head with this and I hope I didn't hurt myself too badly

    Thanks, Ron

Use the installed package manager (Adept Manager) to install packages that are in the repositories. xastir is in the repos for installation.

    K Menu > Applications > System > Adept Manager

Type in xastir and then click once on the package name in the right window pane to expand the description. Click in the box next to Install this package and then click on the large green check mark (Changes) to install.

When I try to install xastir with the adept manager it says no matches found.

Two choices: Open a console and type:
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install xastir
        or
        Code:
        sudo apt-get install synaptic
to install the Synaptic Package manager (preferred to the current Adept Manager), from which you can select and install xastir.

You may want to check whether you have the Universe repository enabled:

In the menu of Adept Manager, choose Adept > Maintain repositories (or something like that). On the first tab, ensure that the second entry (universe) is enabled.

Community-maintained Open Source Software (universe) is checked. I did the sudo ap-get xastir command and it worked like a charm. Synaptic was already installed and it does look a lot better than adept. Thanks for the help. This has really increased my confidence level.

Happy to have aided. Learn form this. Utilize the installed package managers (Synaptic currently preferred over Adept Manager) to look for and install packages from. You should download .deb files as a last resort, and only after you have done your research, and determined that the particular .deb package will run on your system.
