    Install kmid for Kubuntu [SOLVED]

    Hi,

I wanted to install the kmid midi-player..

Apparently it runs with Konqueror and KDE - so i downloaded it from this site:
    http://perso.wanadoo.es/antlarr/kmid.html

Can someone tell me the next step of how to open and install it.

I right-clicked on it and then went on "open" - and it asks what - or which do i want to open it with.

I ended up with two different? programs

    kmid-1.7-1.i386.rpm and kmid-1.7-1.src.rpm

Also can anyone say what i386 and rpm and src mean? Many Thanks in Advance..

    Robert

You can't use that program (package) directly, if at all, in Kubuntu.

kmid-1.7-1.i386.rpm and kmid-1.7-1.src.rpm shows that the package you downloaded is for RedHat Linux, not Kubuntu.

You could use alien, or better yet search for the program in the repositories.

Alien is going to be the best option - kmid is not in the repositories - I checked.

Alien won't be a "guarantee" that the converted package will work, but ...

Add the medibuntu repository, here's how to do it for different releases:
          https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Then search with System > Adept Manager for the package KMid (yes, it's definitely in there! ). I am not sure whether that will work out of the box with midi-files.

If it doesn't: I see I have the package Timidity installed as well... so install Timidity. In KMid's menu, choose Settings > Midi Settings and select a Timidity device there.
You should now be able to play midi files.

Not in Intrepid, and I have the medibuntu repository active.

Hmm, that's a pity... I am indeed on Hardy. Well... then indeed you can use alien. After that, see if the timidity story still holds.

                Re: Install kmid for Kubuntu

                Hi,

As you mentioned the kmid was not there on my list and I'm on Intrepid.

At one stage i did see Timidity listed and tried to install but lost it.

Can anyone advise me how to download and install Alien using the Adept installer? Or using any other way?

                Cheers,

                RObert

Alien allows you to convert LSB, Red Hat, Stampede and Slackware Packages into Debian packages, which can be installed with dpkg.

                  Open a console and type:
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get install alien
After it is installed you can look at the manual page for information on how to use alien:
                  Code:
                  man alien

Timidity shows up in the Intrepid repo, assuming you have the default sources. Rather than get into converting .rpm packages, I would advise first trying the package in the repo -- it is actually designed to work on your system.

                      Re: Install kmid for Kubuntu

Ive installed Timidity, VLC, and MPlayers - and I set the midi default to the right program each time - but still can't get any midi files to download or play.

Can anyone tell me anything else to try with the programs or how to use Alien to convert the kmid rpm file. (ive tried typing Alien in the Konsole and pressing enter and the box just disappears.) Thanks.

                        Re: Install kmid for Kubuntu

I have the standard and the Medibuntu repositories and I found kmid right away and installed it. It required the ridiculous amount of 275 KB of space. I guess Timidity should be somewhere out there, too.

                        Edit...

                        Yeap, there it is...

1st question. Whereabouts please is kmid in the medibuntu repositories.
2nd question. The kmid website says "If you have downloaded the rpm distribution, [which i have] just do 'rpm -i kmid-1.7-1.i386.rpm' as root to install it." How do I do that? Ive tried typing it into the command window and the rpm logo appears - then it just closes.
3rd question. I try instead converting the rpm package by going sudo alien -i kmid-1.7.i386rpm and again the alien logo is there but when i press enter it just closes.

                            Going nuts.

I am justing putting a suggestion here:

Get the debian version from here (debian sid):

                              http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/kmid/download

                              and for timidity:
                              http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/timidity/download

                              Install gdebi from the repos.

Use gedebi to install kmid.deb and or timidity.deb
->right click on file and choose open with->gedebi

It may work or may not. I don't know if debian sid packages work with kubuntu 8.10

                              I hope this helps
