Mounting hardware

I have been running Hardy Heron for some months now, I have only just got round to needing the CD drive, it does not work properly, therefore I guess it has not been mounted properly during installation, could someone tell me how I check this, and correct it if that is the problem.

lspci

will show all devices connected to the motherboard via the PCI bus, which is where the optical drive should show up.
