Using Adept to install Sun Java 6.0 plugin

Hey, I just gave this a shot and when I go to apply the changes I get the following error:

Download failed.
The list of errors is attached. The recovery for this case is currently not implemented. If you see 404 errors, it might be useful to try fetching package lists (see the Sources tab) and retrying the operation.

The error was:
APT Error. Context:
Package download failed,
I wasn't able to locate a file for the sun-java6-jre package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package. (due to missing arch),

I tried fetching the package list and then applying the changes, but it makes no difference. Any suggestions?

I'm looking for this Java plugin in so that I can use jUploadr for flickr. If I can't get the plugin, could anyone suggest a flickr uploader that I could use instead.

what are you trying to install this to ? kubuntu 8.04 or 8.10 and what version of the os do you have running is it the 32-bit or 64-bit ?

Kubuntu 8.10 and the OS is 32 bit

have you tried to update your package list ? enter in the konsole

sudo apt-get update

you may get an error saying something along the line of , error, in package cache. process not completed, try to run this to fix it .. if so do that.. (sorry not at my kubuntu machine and don't remember exactly what it says.)
btw the adept included with kde4 right now is really bad you should install "synaptic package manager" it works much better over all.

Looks like you need to clean up your /etc/apt/sources.list - first of all uncomment all those references to the cdrom as it contains old packages.

Also, what about those translation repos? Do you need them? They do not seem to do anything. Again, uncomment.

As for where to find your sun java - not sure it is in the repos anywhere. You may want to add the medibuntu repo (just google medibuntu). If they haven't got it then you have to install it manually per dpkg.

And after you adjusted your /etc/apt/sources.list do not forget to run a

sudo apt-get update

BTW, what is wrong with the open java version?

it seems that open java is not compatible with the flickr uploader that I'm trying to use. jUploadr which works well with Sun Java 6.0 crashes while opening using the open java plugin.

How do I clean up the /etc/apt/sources.list? I don't think I need all the translation stuff, but I don't remember having put it on there, unless it came attached to something else I've installed. Forgive me, its only my 4th day with Kubuntu and I've never worked with Linux before so this is mostly greek to me. I'm starting to get it, but

Before you make any changes to any file, copy it!

sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list~

Best open kate as root (either on the command line or with ALT+F2):

kdesu kate

Now open /etc/apt/sources.list and either delete or comment out (put a # at the beginning of the line) relevant entries. When done, save, close your root Kate and run

sudo apt-get update

Once you have the correct repos and find the Sun Java package you want to install, it is better to install it from a command line in a terminal, because at one point during the installation, you have to agree to the license. How to do this is not always apparent if installing using a package manager such as adept.

After installation, you will need to run update alternatives to make sure your system is using the Sun java as default.

Okay.... I managed to figure out where the cd stuff was coming from. In adept it had been selected under third party software, so i unchecked it and voila... its gone. This is what the list looks like now:

Nevermind. I ran apt-get help and it suggested that I run apt-get check and that found what was broken. From there I was able to fix it. I'm starting to understand a little bit about how this whole thing works, but it seems I only know enough to get myself in trouble. Does anyone know of a good book to explain the basics of Kubuntu?
