unable to login in kubuntu 8.10 after upgrade through adept installer

hello there.
I am a total fresher to linux
somehow i was able to use adept installer to upgrade the installed softwares
but since then i am unable to login even when entering the right password
please help

Try,

Pressing Alt+Ctrl+F1 together, which will take you into text mode? Can you log in here?

If you can log in here try issuing the following commands:

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo apt-get upgrade

then

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

then

sudo reboot

thanx for the help buddy.
I cud not get through
Although upon googling for info it turned out that it is caused by a bug due to incompatiblity of 856 motherboard with the kernel 2.6.27-9.
so i reloaded kubuntu and while updating avoided the kernel upgrade.
Upgrade is still on as net connection is slow
will post again if this is successful
