Advanced display settings in Kubuntu 8.10 (driver problems)

    Hi,
I have just installed Kubuntu 8.10 after having similar problems with Ubuntu 8.10 as well. My SiS graphics card is not recognized correctly and I only get 960x600 as the highest resolution.

I have tried to fix this by installing KControl (which seems to be gone) but have not succeeded. I have also tried to edit xorg.conf, which surprisingly is completely empty.

    Does anyone know about

    a) any solutions to this or similar problems? Changing to the Vesa driver seems reasonable, but how?
    b) how you are generally supposed to handle more complex issues like these, when the automatic recognition does not work and the settings app is totally crippled?

Try not booting into your normal kernel. Boot into Recovery. That has an option "Try to recover xserver". That has been known to fix resolution problems.

Thanks, tried that, but gave only the same result.
